St. Mary In Win Over When the curtain went up on the 1886 Pacific Coast football season over the weekend, fans saw an apparently m u C h weakened Stanford team, a surprisingly pow erful Southern California squad, mass display of University of California talent and a dark horse university of Washington eleven that put up a valiant fight against the national champion Minnesotans. Stanford, 1885 bowl titlist, was outsmarted by Buck Shaws first Santa Clara team, 1870. The In dians. who meet Washington State next Saturday, showed but little of the drive that swept them through their conference schedule with but one defeat last year. The Minnesota Gophers had to turn on all their power and speed to outdistance the Huskies AT. Washington came ont of the contest with Halfback Jimmy Cain injured and other players battered but the team expects a breather in next Saturdays conference game with Idaho. University of Southern Califor- MIA trounced Oregon State, 38–7, in the Weakends biggest upset. The Trojan machine, long supreme on the west coast, showed much of its lormer versatility and three deep manpoWer as it swamped the Corvallis team under barrage of touchdoWnS. The University of California Bears had an easy time with the California Aggies, beating them $50, but ran into difficulty against Amos Alfonso Stages College of the Pacific eleven, which they managed to beat 40. Stub Allison poured out his plentiful shock troops in the doubleheader, giving little indication of the unit he will use during the remainder Of the campaign. The Bears meet ST. Marys next Saturday. U.CL.A., in a twin bill, beat Pomona 800 and Occidental 21–0. The Bruins meet Montana Friday night. st. Mary’s kingpin among the independents” doWned Gonzaga 26–13 in a Sunday game at San Francisco.
