HERE & THERE in the HEADLINES world to argue among themselves oVel the Italo- Ethiopian dispute, Japan this week proceeded to carry out her plans of carving a new empire in northern China. Following the national Chinese gov ernment’s move last week Of haltlng the formation of an autonomous state in the five northern provinces, Japan made good her threat to send troops into the area, and latest reports were that a number of cities had been seized by the Japs, with Pelplng being under martial law. Soaring across the Pacific ocean, the China Clipper, huge flying boat, was near it’s destination at Manila today, having left San Francisco Sat urday. The trip, while not it’s first, was the start of regular transoceanic schedule between California and the Philippines. The first stop of the flight was at Honolulu, 241O miles from San Fran cisco. Another 1880 mile hop took it to Midway Island, then to Wake Island and Guam where it rested today Thus began a new chapter in the history of transpacific transportation. Less than forty years from the time that steam began to replace sailing ships on the Pacific, the world has seen a new type of ship replace the plodding ocean tramps. In no other sport does the “jinx” rule apply as in football. Some teams can play unbeatable football against every opponent but one, and year after year this rule will hold good. WS.C. is uses jinx, for instance, while use. is Oregon’s jinx and Oregon is Washington’s jinx. This rule proved true last Saturday as a weaker Oregon team marched down the field to a touchdown against washington In the first quarter: In the drive it’s formidable fullback was injured, and Washington came back to score few minutes later. But Oregon’s try-for-point was good and Washington’s was not, so Oregon still led, 7–6. From then on the game was a wild exhibition of passing, running and penalties, with Washington having all the best of it except when touchdowns were near, and Oregon went home knowing that their old jinx against Washington still held good. In other games of the weekend, ,Notre Dame lived up. to it’s earlier rep utation of being last-minute team to trim U.S.C., 2O-13, while Stanford defeated California, 1870. It was this last game which fans OF the nation were watching, for on its outcome depended the choice OF Rose Bowl contestant. Stanford’s splendid showing overshadowed California; earlier claims to greatness and wor for them the coveted honor of defend ing the west coast on New Years Day in the football classic of the nation. 1t is the third year in succession that they have won the honor. The Graf Zepplin, famous German air-ship, set an involuntary non-stol record this week when it flew from Africa to South America on it’s reg ular scheduled trip, only to find rebe soldiers in command of Brazilian air ports. Dropping it’s cargo of mail, the shil started back for Africa, picking up sup plies from ship at sea. 1t was ordered however, to cruise along the Atlantic coast of South America, and finally after many hours of such loafing, cam down at Pernambuco. “Child of Jesus” former Empero of Ethiopia, deposed by Halle Selassie and claimed by many to be the right full claimant to the throne, died thi week. He had long been prisone of Halle Selassie, and it was though that Italy intended to put him on tn throne of puppet Ethiopian kingdor ifs is present campaign were success full.
