TT begins to dawn upon some of n the experts that they under estimated Michigan and failed to estimate Michigan State. The Wolverines smeared smooth running winning streak of Hoosier major COL lege elevens Saturday by taking In diana University into camp, to 0. Purdue went east and smacked the Fordham Rams, 900, while Notre Dame ran true to form and trounced Wisconsin easily, 27–0 Hanover suffered one of the worst defeats in Panther history when Butler ran roughshod over them at the North Side bowl, tit, and De Pauw and Wabash continued their winning streaks at the expense of Evansville and Franklin, respeclively. Valparaiso continued to hold the Indian sign of gridiron superiority over Ball State as the Uhlans took the Cardinals, 20–6. Rose Poly up held the Hoosier honor with a 46–0 win over Holbrook, and Indiana State Teachers of Terre Haute trounced Eastern Illinois Teachers, 1918, but Earlham invaded the Buckeye state to its sorrow, losing to Defiance, 1916. st. Joseph’s lost to Elmhurst in Illinois, 1870, and Central Normal ran into a rejuvimated Oakland City eleven that came back in the last half to tie the Purple Warriors, 1913.

Saturday, DuC IOuf DattleS = west, southwest and far west share of the days gridir0n d In the east Yale meets Navy at New Haven before an expected crowd of 50,000. In the midwest Notre Dame bat ties Pittsburgh at South Bend be- fore 8 probable crowd of 50,000. In the southwest Southern Metho- dist clashes with rice at Dallas be- fore capacity crowd of 25,000. In the west Washington State plays Washington at Pullman be- fore an anticipated crowd of 30,000. Important. Conference. Sectional, National, and even Rose Bowl hopes, will be at stake i’m those four games-One of the fanciest mid- October pro- grams of many 8 year. The nation al champion might possibly emerge. Yale’s spectacular comeback in crushing Pennsylvania last week, 31–20, after trailing 20–6 late in the second period, has made the Ellis slight favorites over the Middies. Navy put on comeback of its own last week when the Midshipmen wiped up TO deficit to trim Vir- ginia, 26–7. The broken field running of two brilliant Sophomores, Albert Hess berg of Albany, N. Y., and Clinton Frank of Evanston, Ill.,, and the pass-catching of wise-cracking Larry Kelley features Yale’s wide-open attack, which has scored 65 points in two games. Navy, with Young Teah, has started slowly, beating w. and M, 30–0, and Merger, 27–0, in addition to Virginia. “Shoot The Works” Notre Dame, seeking revenge for three straight shutouts by Pitt, will take off the wraps against Jock Sutherland’s young and untried Partners. The Irish are top-heavy with high-class backs, but the lnie play has been spotty in beating Kanas, 28–7, Carnegie Tech, 14–3, and Wisconsin, 27–0. The loss of a regular tackle, John Michuta, for the remainder of the season came at an inopportune time for the Irish. Dr. Sutherland himself predicts de- feat for Pitts. The winner of this game will go a long way in the na- tional championship battle. Down in Dallas Southern Metho- dist, which leads the nations major teams in scoring, with 148 points, will attempt to upset Rice, last years Southwest Conference cham pion. The Mutangs, under their new coach, Matty Bell, have bowled over Denton Teachers, 39–0, Austin Col lege, 60–0, Tulsa, 14–0, and Wash ington U. (St. Louis), 36–6. Rice has beaten Louisiana State, 10–7, Du- quesne, 27–7, and Creighton, 14–0, in three intersectional games. The Owls, featuring their two all-Amer- ican halfback candidates, Bill Wal lace and John McCauley, are fav- oped. State Special The winner of the Washington Washington State brawl on the coast will be serious contender for the Pacific coast title. Last year they battled to bruising scoreless tie. They appear to be as evenly matched again this year, with touchdown or less likely to decide the winner. Washington has beaten Idaho, 14–0, and Santa Clara, 23–6, the latter a notable victory. Wash ington State holds a 46–6 victory over Puget Sound, 33–0 win over Willamette and a 13–7 triumph over Montana.

Big Ten Proves Strength. ~se A Ten. as whole. was much weaker than usual, proved entirely unfounded as Purdue and Iowa accounted for the scalps of two previously unbeaten Eastern powers; Illinois halted Southern California, and Minnesota abruptly checked Nebraska’s bid for the national champion ship. Purdue invaded New York and trounced Jimmy Crowley’s Fordham Rams, 300, while Iowa’S Hawkeyes. a powerful outfit. turned back Col gates Red Raiders, 1876. Illinois took advantage Of all the breaks and wal loped Southern California, 1870, while Minnesota toppled Nebraska, 1877, after a ding-dong struggle in which the Cornhuskers tossed away several opportunities to push over the winning score. With Ohio States Buckeyes running up an 85–7 count on Drake, Wisconsin’s Badgers were the only Big Ten losers in outside competition, taking a bad 27–0 beat ing from Notre Dame. Michigan sur prised by taking Indiana over the hurdles, TO, in the only conference game of the day. The most spectacular game of the day, however, was fought at Philadelphia before $4,000 spectators, Yale’s flashing offensive carrying the Ellis to a 3l-20 triumph over Pennsylvania after the Quakers had scored two touchdowns early in the first quarter While Army and Dartmouth were hanging up one-sided triumphs in the East, Manhattan took a bad 32–0 beating from strong Louisiana State University to make 1t a ruinous day for Eastern foot ball all around.
