JONES RESIGNS AS PROTEST TOLONC INTERFERENCE Students in UprOar as Uni- versity Head Attempts Compromise Baton Rouge, La, Dec 17--(UP1 -Resignatoin of Lawrence 4. (Biff) Jones as head football coach after tilt with Senator Huey P. Long left the Louisiana State university campus in an up- roar as students returned to class es to-day. Jones left to-day on a weeks fishing trip after giving Dr James w. Smith, president of the univer- sity, his oral resignation after Sat- urdays game with oregon univer- sity which L. s. U. won 14–13. Climax to Longs and Jones diff ferent opinions of how a football team should be run came between halves of the game. The senator invaded the L. S. U. dressing room and asked permission to address the team. Jones refused. Long flew into a violet rage and left the players quarters. Smith On the Spot Neither Long nor Dr Smith would discuss the matter to-day. but students talked of it freely. It was understood pr Smith proposed an arbitration of differences and OhS ASpOiL Sdiu JOHSS IllSHL EeCOA-7 sider if way could be found to keep Long away from the team. Evidence that Huey’s football arl- tics irked Jones came several weeks ago when Long maneuvered a burlesque mass meeting on the campus and had Abe Mickal, star halfback, elected to the state senate. Jones confined Mickal to his quarters refusing to let him attend the senate session. Coach Liked Popularity of Jones on the cam pus and his value to the athletic department left pr Smith in a diff ficult position in the argument due to Longs recent domnation of uni. versity affairs. The controversy over the censorship of the newspa per “Revelie,” to prevent attacks on Long. had scarcly died out. Five expelled students were still issuing statements charging Dr Smith with lowing to the Long dictatorship and the memories of seeing Dri Smith hanging in effigy from the campus flagpole were only a week old.

RALLY BY |. s. j. N|PS0REGON, 14–13 Seago’s Conversions After TouChdoWnS TelI-L0Ser’S Point Pass Fails. ~ ATOM ROUGE, La, December x 15.-Snapping back with scoring thrusts after being out classed for nearly half the game, Louisiana State University’s gridmen overcame two touchdown lead today to shade Oregon, IA to l3. The accurate extra-point kicking of Ernie Seago, plus an Oregon decision that put misjudged faith in a pass in stead of kick for conversion, directly accounted for LouiSiana’S triumph. From the first play until the middle of the second quarter the Louisianans were subjected to power battering and a dazzling air attack that made them look bad. Oregons emerald jerseyed warriors. playing smart, fast foot ball, and led by the dashing backs, Michek and Van Vliet, hammered and passed to touch downs in the first and second periods to lead L. S. u, Is to o.
