SPEEDY BRONCO BACKS IN UPSET WIN OVER BEARS Santa Clara Humbles Cali fornia by Startling 200 Count BERKELEY, Cal. Nov. 5.-Spring- ing nimble- footed backfield men through wide holes in California’s forward wall for three long gains, the Broncos of Santa Clara Uni versity startled Pacific Coast Con- ference football fans here Saturday by blanking the Bears, 20 to 0. Although not a conference strug- gle, the game was another indica- ton of the coming strength of the Catholic eleven on the Coast, for, on Friday, St. Mary’s College had surprised Washington State Col lege in 9–6 win. Earlier, Gonzaga University, another Catholic school in Spokane, had defeated the Pull7 man, Wash, team. The result further served to jum- ble comparative standings of inde- pendent and conference teams, but it did boost the Bronco rating to place equal to Stanford and Washington, two leaders of the conference. Stanford, of course, was tied by Santa Clara earlier in the season. The Washington Illus kies now have the only undefeat- ed, united record of any major squad west of the Rockies. Thirty-five thousand fans saw Navy Bill Ingram’s Bears humbled by an alert Santa Clara team Sat urday. The winners scored once each, following long runs, in the second, third and fourth periods. Finally, two detfrmined Califor- mia drives got under way in the last canto, but, although they came dangerously close, the Bronco de- fense held for no score both times. Following the game, a fifteen minute brawl over the goal posts by students from both institutions took place.
