~~@@S O@>s .. This encounter is of paramount 1 significance because it is crucial test for the Columbia Lions, Rose Bowl victors of 1893, and the un- beaten Middies, who under a new system of graduate coaching are out to restore the prestige of An napolis as a first class grid power. Navy believes that its fast, com paratively light team approaches in class the last great squad of sailors which in 1926 went to Chica- go, unbeaten and united, and played Army to 21–21 deadlock, winding up the season a claimant for the national championship. None other than Lieutenant Tom Hamilton, quarterback of that great team, returned from the Pa- cific coast to head the staff of graduate coaches. Apparently he and his successors to rip Miller’s staff have done a good job. Lou Little’s Lions, who last year beat the Middies 14–7, will take the field favored in the betting, but not heavily because five regulars ~of the small squad of 34 are out with injuries. Ed Brominski, back who distinguished himself last sea- son, may get into the game if his bruised side heals. The other four will not: Davis and Maroon. guards; Erhardt, end; and Jackel, tackle. Navy will be at full strength. Buzz Berries, ace of the Middies- the mercurial halfback who ran 75 yards against Columbia last year lis in the infirmary at Annapolis with heavy cold. But Lieutenant Hamilton is confident he will be ready for play. And Hull, left end, who was out of the Maryland game with an injured shoulder, will be in the lineup. The rest are in peak condition. The contest will have as stars Al Barabas, Columbia’s smashing left halfbock who scored the all- important touchdown against Stan ford in the Rose Bowl, and Berries of the Middies. Navy also has an ace in Bill Clark, a chunky, plung- ing halfback, one of the best kick CTS in the east. Clark’s punts travel on an average of 60 yards, outdistancing by far those of Co., lumbia’s fullback, Bill Nevel. In previous games this season, the Lions beat Yale, 1926, and Vir- ginia Military, 29–6, while Navy downed’ William and Mary, 20–7; Virginia, 21–6; and Maryland’s strong eleven 16–13. One more game under the Middies’ belts may prove an important factor. Navy discarded the Notre Dame system this seasons and Lieutenant Hamilton installed a style of stand ard formation resembling that which is so popular at Columbia. Princeton and Harvard. It is a short kick formation. Many plays are run from this alignment, but at times the team shifts into the sim gle or double wing-back formation as does Columbia. Both teams are fast and light and depend upon a combination of power, speed and reception:
