U. Given Chance From a national standpoint the days most important fight will be between Minnesota and Pittsburgh in the east. Chicago’s 27–0 triumph over Mich igan has focused the spotlight or the Midway again after many years but many skeptics want to wait until after the Indiana game tomorrow to place the Maroons in the ranks of the contenders. In the other conference game Purdue, beaten by Rice, Is to 0, and Notre Dame, 10 to 7, will attempt to hit the comeback trail against Wisconsin, victor over Marquette, , to 0, and South Dakota State, &c to 7. With a rebuilt team that has beer rehearsed overtime in the punt pass, pray” system this week, Michigan will attempt to shake off the gloom of defeats by Michigan State and Chicago, and win its first game against Georgia Tech at Ann Arbor Irish Have Worthy Foe Carnegie Tech. long a Notrt Dame nemesis, will afford ample proof of whether the Irish have def1nitely started upward again ir their intersectional battle at South Bend. BIC TEN IS TOPSY TURVY Chicago Heads Standings After Years Of FlOundering In Conference Cellar 8t 1 CHICAGO, ILL.,, Oct. 5. - The Big Ten football standing looked distinctly upside down tcday, with Chicago on top ana Michigan on the bottom. Chicago which has been floundering the cellar for years, scored one of the biggest surprises in recent conference history Saturday by overwhelming Michigan, sup RENE in the Big Ten for the past tour years, 27–0. This dizzy football season will produce many more upsets before the years finale, but the midwest is not likely TO have another such shock as Chicago’s rout of Michigan. 1t was one Of the most decisi’ve football defeats ever handed Michigan team, and the worst licking the Wolverines have suffered since Red Grange ran wild with four touchdowns in II min utes in 1924 and Illinois rolled up a 29-l4 triumph. Chicago hasn’t the top Of the Big Ten to itself, as it has to share the leadership with Illinios and Iowa, each victorious in its one conference game. Michigan also has company in the basement, with such strange bedfelloWs as Indiana and Northwestern. Each has lost its only conference start. Four Unbeaten Going into the fourth week OF the season, only four conference teams boast unbeaten records. They are Chicago, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. 5s,&” Minnesota, which wen its two non-conference games convincing ly, is a stronger favorite than ever to win the Big Ten title. -. In a wild, spectacular. offensive battle, Illinois triumphed over Ohio State, 14–13, avenging s7–6 defeat suffered at the hands of the Buckeyes last year. ..r Conference teams had q sad day in outside games. Wisconsin beat South Dakota State, 28–7, but the Big Ten couldn’t come up. with victory in four other games. Stan ford routed Northwestern, 900, Notre Dame trimmed Purdue, 1871. Nebraska, Blk Six champion, hand ed Iowa its third straight one point defeat in three years, l4–13, Indiana gallantly held Pop Warn er’s strong Temple team tos,a 6–6 tie. Minnesota, getting ready for it’s big battle with Pittsburgh this week, was idle.
