Duke Is Convincing. THAT wild whipping of V. M. I. by Duke probably did not help build up much confidence in the minds of North Carolina University and North Carolina State, the other two schools in the greatest three-cornered rivalry in foot ball. 1t does not pay to get too confident in foot ball, no matter how good may be the available material. Down at Louisiana State, for instance, it was predicted last week that the team would go through without a defeat, but on Saturday afternoon Rice In stitute stepped in and tied the Baton Rouge eleven, 9 to 9. That tie may be a good thing for Biff Jones team. Bo Mcmillan made a successful debut at Indiana, surprising everybody by whipping decisively Ohio University, 27 to 7. A local man, who played under Mcmillan at Kansas State, few days ago said it would-not be possible for Mcmillan to succeed at Indiana in his first year. because his system Of offense is too intricate. How ever, if Ohio University is anywhere near as strong as it has been rated in the preseason dope then Mcmillan bids fair to make good without the least question. and in his first year. too. Virginia Polytechnic Institute took one on the nose in its opening with TEMPLE University The Gobblers are said to have good material, which Is good material for this section, but possibly not good compared with Temples. Washington and Lee proved that all the optimism its supporters have been showing has not been without some foundation, at least, by whipping Kentucky And when a team beats any eleven coached by Chet wynne that team has to be good.
