field combination with Maentz, Grayson and Alustiza that packs power, has speed, pass ing and defensive strength that should satisfy the most critical and ambitious alumnus. This combination decisively defeated U. S. C. in every department o. the game and gave the Trojans the first beating in 80 games. The Stanford victory upset all the predictions of the experts and put Stanford in a position to tie for the Pacific Coast championship with Oregon. The defeat of U. S. c. marks the end of their complete domination Of coast foot ball. The entire Stanford horde played super-charged foot ball, but Corbus, Grayson, Hamilton and Moscrip were outstanding. Cotton Warburton was the only Trojan to live up to his reputation by his 45-yard run for U. S. C.s lone touchdown. The remarkable feature OF the game was the high per centage OF completed passes by both teams-six out of seven completed for Sanford, and six out of 10 for U. S. G. w WASHINGTON met a California w team that was so hot that the California players were smoking at the shoe tops and after getting away to bad start on a blocked punt by Boone, Californias right tackle, that was converted into touchdown by the recovery, Washington never regained consciousness and continued to tumble punts, throw wild passes that were In tercepted for touchdowns, until the Huskies of Washington finally proved that they were out to make almost every error known to foot ball. The California line outcharged Washington on both offense and detense and had a decided advantage in the use OF three complete teams on hot day. The performance of California against Washington makes one wonder what happened to this potentially great team in its two tie games and one loss. Playing the brand of foot ball Cali fornia showed Saturday, Stanford will have something to think about in the Dig game Two weeks AenCe. Although California scored 80 points, the figures show that only 126 yards we’re gained from the line of scrimmage to 123 yards for Washington and the first downs registered favored Wash ington to 6. But California cashed in on every Washington error and was not forced to open up its bag of tricks. ~ RECON proved to be the power house organization that it has been all year by crashing run ming attack which smashed the hitherto undefeated Oregon Staters’ hopes for championship. Oregon has not thrown passes all season and does not need this method of attack when they can continue to show the sustained drive and excellent kicking they have to date. Mikulak firmly established his right as the big shot among the coast backs. His defensive play has always been supreme, but his line bucking has i’m proved with every game and he can are distributed. Norman Franklin played great ball for Oregon State, but could not get loose The game was so hard fought that Oregon lost two star linemen by injuries, Hughes, center, and Eagle, tackle. oregon State lost Schwarnmel, a tackle. These injuries will be felt In the Oregon-U. S. G. and the Ford ham-O. S. C. games. Washington State defeated Idaho by the superior quarterbacking of Phil Sarboe in a game that turned into wild passing affair with a total Of 80 passes by the two contestants. Idaho outgained Washington State. but this was offset by superior punting. Willis Smith, Idaho’s fiashy midget back, returned punt 81 yards for Idaho’s lone touchdown. T>HE San Diego Marines refused to sign an armistice with U. c. L. A and elected to continue the fight until the final gun found them on the short end of a 14-to-13 score. Cheshire Kuble and Linesay were too fast for the Marines. Montana. led by Stansbury and Elastic, solved the Gonzaga passes and turned loose fourth-quarter passing and tumble tussle with numerous penal ties and both teams disregarded ARM stice day until reminded Of the national holiday by the officials. Hawaii supplied the upset of the Rocky Mountains by defeating Denver, 7 to 6. Colorado almost stopped the long winning streak of Utah which would have been something to write about. but Coach Armstrong; Utes had the final punch to lead, 13 to 6. Mon tana State lost its final game of the season to Idaho Southern Branch, l3 to 8. Colorado Aggies nosed out the Utah Aggies by field goal and the favorite Colorado Teachers came through with 70 points to for Colorado Mines. ‘copyrisht, 1898. “ North American News
