It is no wonder to me that Michigan again is among the ma tional gridiron leaders, and I will not wonder at this circumstance a year or 10 years from now. Best Organized Defense In my opinion, Michigan has the best organized defense IN the entire nation and one that none of the famous offensive systems will consistently puncture. An example of Michigan’s defensive plans was seen recently by a scout who reported that a Wolverine defensive back left his normal position to go up close to the scrimmage line in order that his most apparent mistake might draw a forward pass on the succeeding play. This happened in situation where a pass might we’ll be under taken by the opposition. So when the opposing quarterback saw this back leaving his position down field unprotected despite the warning of pass, pass” from other Michigan players, the quarterback called for pass and played directly Into the hands of the Walverine back. Back to Position The latter simply ran back to his normal position as soon as the ball was snapped and awaited the pass, which he promptly in tercepted. The warning Of his team mates was part of the trap. In recent years Michigan has proved capable of destroying rather consistently the most pow erful offenses. The Wolverine defense has proven as disastrous to one system as to another. This has largely been due to the Or ganization of its defensive plans and the intelligent type OF play ers that have worn its colors. Michigan’S recent defeat Of Ohio State, achieved in compare lively easy fashion, did not occasion much surprise among foot ball men who have learned of the intricacy of the Wolverine defense. To the general public that 13–0 Wolverine victory did sur prise, especially in view of the fact that the Buckeyes shortly before had walloped Virginia. 75–0.
