BEST FOOTBALL EVER PLAYED Princeton and Pennsylvania Win Prom Yale and Harvard. LOSERS CLEARLY oUTCLAssED Yale Scored on a Fluke, While Harvard Played Pluckily Against Pennsyl- vania’s Bigger Team. At Philadelphia University Of Pennsylvania, ........ 8 Harvard ...,”.. ...... ..,.”.....” At Yew York Princeton ....,... ...........,..’... “a Yale ......... .......,...,....--.,... D Philadelphia, November Z.--Beaten. battered. shattered. but not disgraced. This is but the preface TO the story Of one Of the grandest battles ever wit messed on the football grldiron. Cruel fate seemed to follow Harvard. but even In the face OF the most discOuraging circumstances they never faltered, their only thoughts apparently being pros pectlve-in fact, almost certain defeat, for their lines were fast becoming weakened by the terrible battering OF the heavy men OF old Pennsylvania, and the pangs Of defeat which would come TO them should their efforts fail. Every man played as though his life depended on the result Of the game. There was a reason which comes only with thorough teaching. Each was try ing 10 help the other. Harvard’s defensive work for time was superb. but the awful battering their line. received from the heavyweights on the Pennsylvania team began to tell before the first half was finished and many delays were occasioned by Grim son warriors being stretched upon the grass. For a time the faithful” who were urging their acknowledged team on to greater efforts. seemed to falter. but the cheer was taken up by the red and blue followers Thousands Of Pennsylvanians shouted for their GRIM son rivals not because they hoped to see them win the contest, but because OF the plucl<y tight they were putting up in the face OF overwhelming odds The crimson eleven had gone into bat tie with some of their best mea in a crippled condition. They had fought their fight In the early stages Of the game. and now they were slowly but surely being driven back. The line would hold for two or possibly three downs. and then the red and blue would gain their distance and 1t was but a repetition of the previous disaster Harvard’s line stood the battering ram process OF Pennsylvania for the first half and II was in this half that the crimsons made their only touch down. But in the second half the physical condition of the red and blue commenced to assert itself, and one by one were the Harvard cripples carried from the field. The Pennsylvania team as a whole deserve universal praise and but little censure. Every player was a star and it was hearty cooperation which made Pennsylvania’s onslaught upon the crimson lines damaging and their defense so remarkable. YALE-PRINCEToN GAME. New York. November 21.-The hours between and this afternoon must go down to posterity as memorable in the annals Of football. Two of the great rival factions in American college life. Yale and Princeton, had each selected eleven men to do royal battle on the gridiron. Each did glorious work and won great honors, but the sons of old Nassau defeated their antagonists by a score of “a to 6, amid wild cheering The best of all football grounds, Man haitian field, was taxed to its utmost capacity by eager thousands who were willing to sit in the drizzling rain and penetrating atmosphere for three full hours to witness the greatest sporting event of the year. The gates were open ed at about noon and from that time till long after the game had started crowds poured into the enclosure from the elevated railroad trains and horse cars The fair sex turned out in large numbers; society bellies dressed in pref ty sweater costumes sat beside their brothers, fathers or beaux, never ut tering word of complaint during the long weary drizzle and adding much to the beauty and enthusiasm of the scene. At the appearance of the contestants upon the gridiron the rival factions engagged in singing songs in honor of the players and shouting various college yells, Captain Murphy chose the east goal, giving the Tigers the kickoff. From that moment the two teams, as they lined up for the scrimmage, following the ball in its progress up and down the field. became the focal point towards which $4,000 pairs of eyes were directed. For the first time since ’9S and for the fourth time since ‘SS, a rep team from the Tigers col lege defeated the sons of Eli today. The score was “a to G. and when II has been added that Yale’s six points were scored on fluke, the story has been told for never from the beginning of the game until its end were the men from New Haven able TO cope with their sturdy antagonists. The Yale eleven was clearly out-played at every point Of football on the other hand, the Princeton team never for an in slant stopped playing the hard game with which they commenced.
