be played by their favorites today and tomorrow on foreign fields, their chief concern is likely to be in the George Washington Iowa contest tonight in the Clark Griffith Stadium. This is Iowa’s first visit to the Ma tion’s Capital and its second to the East and. while it occupies lowly place among Western Conference elevens, it Is, nevertheless, strong and well able to look after itself A low team in the West ern Conference Is net a weak team, by any means. The fact that Coach Jim Pixlee Of George Washington says frankly that his team has chance to win adds to the attractiveneSs of the game, and creates q somewhat unusual situation For a coach Of a local college eleven to say that his team has a chance to whip big Middle Western university is unusual in itself. and certainly should be sufficient to indicate at least hard fought game. 1OWA’S eleven came in yesterday after i noon and worked out for a while last night under the big lights. It has husky outfit, but hardly seems much more formidable than the local team, as far as appearances are concerned. or course, one can never tell what foot ball team may do once it gets under way. Most of the great In dian teams that Warner developed at Carlisle when they walked out on the field hardly looked as efficient as they We’re. And the came may be true of Iowa. Last year George Washington went out to Iowa City and lost, to o. Eight new it seems to be somewhat stronger than 1t was then, which may or may not mean that it has better chance to win. George Washington plans to rely largely on its passing game, as it figures 1t may not be able to make much head way in rushing against Iowa’s big line. Iowa. so far, has not shown a great Of tense. but has proved strong defensively. While Indiana beat Iowa, IL to 0. and Minnesota won by three touchdowns to one, it does not take much other than these two results to show that Iowa Is not easy to gain ground against. The two teams are to line up at 8 O’Clock. TWO other games are to be played L here this week end, one this after noon between Gallaudet and Bal timore University and the other ton1orrow at Clark Griffith Stadium between Quantico Marines and Davis Elkins. Both these games should be closely contested. and the one in which the Ma rines are to figure should be just about as interesting and as well played as any college game If Davis -Elkins is as strong as it has been at times in the past few years, its meeting with Ma rtnes may result In a brilliant contest. Marines have in their lineup several men who could make almost any uni versity eleven. TEORGETOWN is at Detroit tonight “ to play University of Detroit. Be- fore leaving here Coach Tom Mills expressed himself in rather an optimistic vein, saying that he believed his team had chance to take the measure of the Detroiters. Mills most significant statement was to the effect that his men have the ability to win, have much greater ability than they have shown and will win games as soon as they get the right spirit.\ The game, while being played at Detroit. is to be shown on the gridgraph in Ryan Gymnasium at Georgetown. The play begins at 9:15 local time. CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY IS at ~ Worcester, Mass, today for per- haps the most important test it has ever faced on q gridiron. The Brook landers. with a winning record behind them, meet Holy Cross, usually one of the strongest elevens in the East, in a game that may mean gridiron prestige far greater than any other Catholic U. eleven has achieved. Coach Bergman, like Tom Mills, was surprisingly optimistic when his team left here yesterday and that despite the fact that he may have to play without his quarter back, Charley McVean, who is not in very good shape. MARYLAND leaves early tomorrow lVl morning for Richmond. where it is to 60 against Virginia Military Institute. The Old Liners apparently have another hard tussle on their hands, If v. M. rs victory over Virginia may be accepted at its fact value. Virginia won from Maryland. to g, while v. M. I. beat Virginia, 6 to 4. This does not seem to insure walk away for either eleven. Maryland has put in much harder week at practice than it has since Sep tember, the squad having been down to fundamentals of blocking and charging in a way that probably would have been very valuable If put into effect a month ago. Incidentally, the squad Is In better physical condition than it has been for any game since 1t met Virginia. TWO or three games in the South toi morrow may develop into great ex- hibitions of modern foot ball. Especially is this true Of Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech, of Duke and Tennessee. Vanderbilt two weeks ago would have been rated an almost certain victor over the Atlanta school, but since the latter gave North Carolina such a walloping the situation seems changed. Wander bilt may be lucky to escape defeat. as 1t has been through far more grueling schedule than Tech. A lot OF people think that Duke may make a much better showing against Tennessee than is looked for. Duke has team Of more than average power and is well coached. It may give Tennessee great battle, although Tennessee is the favor1te. 0NE Of the great rivalries OF the ~ South is to be fought out tomor- row at Chapel Hill between the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State College. These two in stitutions have little love for each other under the best Of conditions, and when they get on the foot ball field that seems wonderful opportunity to battle out their differences. North Carolina in recent years has almost invariably been a winner, but it would be not at all surprising to see the State College eleven come out ahead this time. It is the enc game in the State of North Carolina that almost everybody who cares anything about foot ball goes to see. WASHINGTON AND LEE is due to w take another whipping, Is it faces Virginia Polytechnic Institute tomorrow at Lexington. The Generals, II
