He pulled two touchdcwns. figu- rativeiy speaking, from a spot be- hind his sharp blue eyes and be- meath his gradually greying hair. Those scores gave his eleven. an underdog in the pre-game betting, a IS to o victory over Coach Pop Warmers powerful Cardinals. The victory made Southern Cal ifornia favorite to retain its coast conference championship of last year and stamped 1t again as one of the leading contenders for na- tional honors, which 1t won in 1891. How It’s Done It was late in the second quar- ter, with the score to 0, that the former Yale and Iowa coach d. rected that first touchdown. Stan ford had kicked from its own goal line. Oryille Mohler, generally rated as the best quarterback on the coast, had returned the punt through a broken field 25 yards to the Stanford 20 yard line. It was the first time of the game the Tro- jams had driven deep into Stanford territory. “How much time to go?” Jones shouted. Two minutes left in this half” an assistant reported. “McNeish and Warburton,” Jones thundered as he jumped to his feet. “Go in there now. You know what to do. That’s right, the pass” Bob McNeish, handsome black haired fullback, U. s. C’‘s passer. and ISvine Warburton, pint-sizcd quarterback, dashed onto the field. ! Warburton called a signal and the ball went to McNeish. McNeish faded back and then rihed the ball 25 yards to the waiting arms of Ford Palmer, end. Palmer made the catch in the end zone and Southern California had it’s initial score. but failed to convert. In the third quarter Jones again reached for a score. Mohler paved the way this time, too. for he was directing the team as it came up the field. long pass to Palmer put the ball on the Stanford yard line. You See? Warming up along the sidelines was Homer Griffith, hardest driv- ing back of the Trojan team. “Griff.” Jones yelled. Griffith, who only lately had left the game, went back in at full back. Two plays later Griffith crashed through right tackle for the second touchdown. Southern California converted and the score was 13 to 0. as it remained through the game. From this time on Jones spent nervous. cigarette smoking, lip wetting moments keeping the score as 1t was. content to have his team keep Stanford from cross ing the goal line.
