MICH. GRID TEAM FAR ADVANCED, SAYS HANLEY CHICAGO, Oct. 10.-A new complexion was added to the Big Ten football outlook as a result of last Saturdays games. Two of the preseason favorites came through, namely Michigan and Purdue. Northwestern and Ohio States dreams Of a cham pionship were shaken when the Wildcats lost to Michigan, Is to 6, and Indiana not only tied Ohio but outplayed the Buckeyes for a portion of the game. Purdue featuring a hard run ming and hard-driving backtleld, scored a single touchdown mar gin over the powerful Minnesota eleven. Purdue outgained Mime sofa decidedly in the first hall, but by means of a beautiful pass ing attack the Gophers were able to overcome this advantage as far as yardage was concerned, registering, the same number OF first downs as Purdue. Offsets Advantage Michigan showed us a team as far advanced as squad normally attains in November. They had fine kicking, two great ends, clever, shifty runner in Newman good kicking by Regeczi, and very effective method Of protect ing their safety man on kicks. This latter factor, coupled with Petoski and Williams ability to cover Michigan’s kicks, more than offset Olson’s ability to outkick Regeczi. Newman is a fair passer, but the real secret of the Wolverines passing attack is the fact that all of their receivers run with abandon. In the first half, when we did not rush Newman very vigorously, Michigan’S pass game looked unstoppable. In the Sec ond half, when he was rushed, the passes were not such a threat. Michigan’s blocking on New mans return of punts was as fine as it has ever been my misfortune to see. Bernard’S work at defensive center was particularly impressive, as was the defense of the entire Michigan sec ondary. The better team won as the game was played, but 1 can not help but derive a lot of salts faction out of the defensive play Of our linesmen. They held Michigan’s running attack to a single first down and time after time opened gaps in the Michigan forward wall that permitted the Northwestern backs to make number of first downs. Olson Improved Olson’S heady punting and defensive play and his plunging show him to be a considerably improved football player. Sullivans all-around play stood out while Kawal’s blocking and defenSive we’re also of the highest order. Wisconsin proved that 1t war rants a place among the confer ence title contenders by it’s 34-to-0 victory over Iowa. The Badgers flashed a strong running game led by Linfor, Fontaine and Schil- Ter. The one-sidedness Of the VIC tory over Iowa gives Wisconsin something more than just hope as it contemplates next Saturdays game with Purdue. Chicago lived up to advance predictions by presenting a greatly improved team against Yale. The Maroons possess some fine running backs who should develop as the season progresses. This team along with Indiana and Wisconsin showed the most i’m provement Of the Big Ten mem bers Saturday. Illinois continued its warming up preparations by overcoming Bradley, 20 to 0. The Illini open their Big Ten season against Northwestern next Saturday and, il reports are correct, the Wild cats are in for another busy after noon.
