MARYLAND EASILY WINS OVER HOPKINS Conquers Old Rival, 35–14 Using Mixture of Regulars and Reserves. T UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND using a mixture of regulars and reserves, had no trouble in con- quering it’s old State rival, Johns Hopkins, 35 to IA, yesterday in the Baltimore Stadium as $4,000 fans looked on. Starting a mixture of regulars and reserves, the Old Liners picked up two touchdowns in the first period, and with it’s varsity in action it added one in the third quarter and two more on the fourth. Shorty Chalmers added the extra point on each occasion. Hopkins got score just as the first half ended, following recovered tumble, by long run and two forward passes, the touchdown coming on a heave caught in the end zone by Kelly. This same player put Hopkins in a position, to count its final touchdown when Maryland was leading, IS to z, after making its fifth score. He took the kickoff and ran to the 7-yard mark before Poppelman caught him from behind. However, Beeler’s pass to Ives made the needed distance. Beeler and Weitzel kicked the extra points. Chalmers, the only regular back to start; May and Herman, reserves in at the outset, and Berger, Woods and Poppelman, regulars who performed in the second half ran the Hopkins de- Tense ragged and with the Maryland line outplaying the rival forward wall it simply was question of the size Of the score. Maryland used enough passes to keep the Hopkins defense guessing and two of them went for touchdowns Maryland made “a first downs and. including passes, picked up total OF 529 yards during the contest. A beautiful 60-yard run for a touch down by Poppelman in the third period was nullified when Maryland man was ruled as clipping from behind in taking out Hopkins player. Poppelman was outrunning his pursuer and did not need the help, that resulted in the ball being called back and a 25-yard penalty i’m posed on the Old Liners.
