TWO LONG PASSES UPSET. VANDERBILT! Vols 21–7 Win Keeps Them in Race for Southern Con- ference Title. |HN knoxville, Tenn, Novem- K Der 1.-Two long, surprise L – passes, judiciously slipped = in between running plays today gave the University of Ten nessee its fourth consecutive vic. tory over Vanderbilt and kept the Vols in the Southern Conference foot ball championship hunt. The score was 81 to Z. Touchdowns resulted directly from each Of these passes, both thrown BIZ Gene McEver. playing his final home game in a Tennessee uniform. The Vols scored another touchdown and SAFETY later In the game, but 1t was these sudden passes, accurately thrown TO receivers In an almost clear field that decided the issue. Through its victory Tennessee served an injunction on the Southern Confer. ence, restraining It from immediately voting this years championship to Tu. lane, winner over Georgia at Athens. Before $4,000 spectators Tennessee defeated its arch State rival and ad. vanced another step toward an unbeatep season. Only Kentucky remains to be played at Lexington, KY, on Thanks giving. A Battle Of Lines. Today’s battle was largely one BE-. tween two husky lines, charging hare all the way. First it would be Ter, nessee and then Vandy forwards who would bring up q drive shot. Honors were about evenly divided. Vanderbilt’s lone touchdown came from two plays, both as surprising and brilliantly executed as Tennessees win ming passes, which put them In positon for their first scores. The Com. modores dug up o wide, spread play which In two charges Melted touch down from midheld. Opportunity Knocked at vandy’s doors first, but the Commo6ores did not an swer the call. Their first charge from the 50-yard line was stopped on the 18yard line, and here Beasiey missed an attempted field goal. Starting on their 40, Tennessee rang up two first downs, and then McEver, ION his 40-yard line, threw q long for ward to Derryberry, who was in the open behind the Commodores’ defensive backs, He was run out OF bounds on the two, but McEver bucked over on the first play. The place kick for the extra point failed and Tennessee led, to o. Spread Plays Earn Score. Soon after vandys regular backheli entered the contest, Henderson sprang his spread play and behind perfect In. reference ran 81 yards 60 the IS. Call. ing the same play toward the other side. Henderson blocked the way for Roberts,. substitute for johnson. 90 cross the goal line standing up. Henderson kicked the point and vandy lea z to at the half. Early in the third period. McEver again passed, this time to Reyburn, for 80 yards, and the swift end ran to the 2-yard line before being downed. This pass came out Of formation based on the old Statue Of Liberty” play, which found the Commodores following the supposed ball carrier. McEver plunged over for the score on his first try, and the extra point was made by Kohlhase. The final touchdown and safety came in the fourth period. Henderson’s kick from behind his goal was blocked by Kohlhase, Tennessee fullback and an automatic safety was added as the ball bounced behind the end zone. GRID TEAMS NEAR HOME STRETCH Head Football Coach at Harvard) BOSTON, Nov. l6.-Footbau teams throughout the country are nearing the home stretch. The season has been productive of some great games, and some good teams. Tulane and Tenn essee in the South, Southern Methodist in the Southwest, Southern California on the Pacific Coast, and Notre Dame and Northwestern in the midwest, are the outstanding teams in their sections. Seldom have there been SO many good teams in the East. Though Harvard alone Of the major teams is undefeated and united, many other teams have grand records. That must have been a superb Pittsburgh team which defeated Army, $50. The same should hold of Colgate which defeated Syracuse, 21.7. Fordham is undefeated. Dart mouth is just starting to feel its power. New York University is strong, and I expect that Yale will be ne Of the best teams Of the year when it meets Harvard in the stadium on Saturday. Two Important Games Two games of major interest ahead of the football world this week are the Southern Califor. nia-Notre Dame game at South Bend, and the Harvard–Yale game at Cambridge. Both Notre Dame and Harvard have some thing to worry about from their strong visitors. Probably the only game of last week which was regarded as an upset, and this from a stand point of outstanding contests, was the Dartmouth-Cornell game. Cornell had gone to Hanover un. defeated, but unfortunately had not played a schedule of hard games. It is my opinion that the Dart mouth team was made in its two hard games with Yale and Harvard on successive Saturdays, which proved to be a potentially powerful big green team that 1t could score and could keep the other fellow from. scoring. Dart mouths line was much stronger against Harvard than it was expected to be, and it did fine lob against Cornell, Extolls Phil O’Connell Harvard opposed a fine foot. ball player on Saturday, namely, Capt. Phil O’Connell, quarterback of Holy Cross. This boy is good passer and a good kicker. He led one of the best Holy Cross teams that ever has played in the stadium. Harvard won, 10, but was forced to play its “a” team right through to win this game, even at the risk of injuries going into the Yale game. Harvard came through nicely and expects to be at full strength against Yale. Generally the Saturday contests ran true to form, although the margin Of Pittsburgh’s vic. tory over Army was surprising. Pitt. beaten by Notre Dame, enhances the prestige of Coach Anderson’s team by it’s decisive win over the Army. Northwestern was expected to do better against Indiana than win by a point. Washington and Lees 60 vic tory over Princeton was not unexpected, and for the first time in history a Princeton team will go into the Yale bowl a week from Saturday, looking back upon six straight defeats. Tulane’S Hopes High Tulane’s POT win over Georgia, hitherto undefeated, came in a game between two outstanding teams. Tulane has played beau tiful football all season and hopes to be selected to oppose Southern California in the Rose Bowl game at Pasadena. Another undefeated Southern team is Tennessee, which, with Gene McEver leading the way turned back Vanderbilt. 21–7. Many Automobile Repair Services are | RnSinaSS SRPUiFA
