UNBEATEN OUTFITS PINNED FOR CLASH Northwestern, Minnesota and Wisconsin in Testing Clashes This Week. “HICAGO, October 26.-The 1 Western Conference grid ~ iron championship Situa- ton has been whitfield down to four undefeated teams, and next Saturday probably will see the select group reduced to two. The most interesting engage ment on the weeks schedule, botA as a battle and as it concerns the championship race, will be the traditional Wisconsin Minnesota game at Minneapolis. Neither has been defeated in conference competition and they appear as evenly matched as any pair in the league. Other strictly Big Ten contests will bring Illinois and Northwestern together at Evanston, Purdue will meet Chicagos hapless Maroons at Chicago, and Ohio State will meet Indiana, which has not been beaten, on the HoosierS’ field. A BOUT the only surprises registered “A last week we’re the sizes of scores. Northwestern did just about as expected in removing the Ohio State menace, 10 to 0 scoring on a 50-yard run by Pug Rentner and a 33-yard drop-kick by Ollie Olson, sophomore fullback Michigan, however, surpassed all eXpectationS by crushing Illinois, 35 to o. inflicting the greatest beating a Zuppke- coached team ever has taken. Indiana. accorded mild edge over Chicago, battered the MaroonS into state of helplessness and made off with a 32-to-6 victory 1t was Indiana’s first foot ball triumph over Chicago since 1910, and from the size OF the score was worth waiting for. Minnesota was favored to take care of Iowa, but not by such margin as “a to 0 The GopherS produced an eff fectiVe running attack and in the third period completed five consecutive passes The Hawkeyes have played four game: without scoring. Purdue invaded the East to defeat Carnegie Tech, Is to 6. but Wisconsin, which had arisen to notable heights in defeating the Boilermakers two weeks ago, was brought crashing back to earth by Pennsylvania, losing 2f-to- 13 decision at Philadelphia. Notre Dame solved the question of what to do with Pittsburgh’S powerful line by throwing the foot ball for enough touchdowns to defeat the Pan theirs IS to 10. at South Bend. Pitts chief consolation was in becoming the first team to score on the Irish this year AIORTHWESTERN’S path to the IN championship, or a share thereof, does not appear beset with difficult ties. Illinois green team should offer lit tie in the way of resistance Saturday, and unless Minnesota defeats Wisconsin this week, the Gophers will not rate as a real threat. Neither Indiana, in spite of its margin over Chicago nor Iowa appears to have what it will take to helt the Wildcats. Ohio will be favored to list Indiana among the defeated Saturday, and Chicago’s chances against Purdue are so small as to be invisible The Min nesota- Wisconsin game appears to be a first-class toss-up. The same applies TO Iowa’s game with George Washing ton. and Michigan, apparently in str;da. has the edge over Princeton, which it plays in the East.
