GRID TEAMS Won, SAYSCASE:Y NotD Head Coach at HGrUGrd. By International News SeFviee0 BOSTON, Oct. 19.-It is no longer possible to speak of upsets because we are now in that portion Of the football season when natural rivals are meeting in major contests. Outstanding among such contests last Saturday were the victories Of under dogs in at least three games where their rivals looked to be superior. Harvard came from behind to nose out a smooth, pow erful Army eleven; Columbia sur prised Dartmouth, and Ohio State scored a decisive win over Michlgan. All of these victories were won by better football and not by lucky breaks. The winning team in each case outplayed its rival, even though the foes might have had a bigger reputation. It is this sort of thing that makes foot ball our greatest college game. Tulane and Tennessee stamped themselves as leaders Of the South with Georgia by their decisive victories over old rivals. Tulane defeated Vanderbilt, 10 to 0, by some more of their great team play that has made their teams outstanding for years. This victory, coming on top Of Vanderbilt’s win from Ohio State . week ago, gives South ern football another boost over the Big Ten. McEver, Of Ten neSsee, is one Of the great backs of the year and he proved 1t by scoring most Of his teams rs points over Alabama. Bo McMillin is a Kentucky colonel because of his great play with Centre College 10 years ago. Now they will have to invent a new title for him out in Kansas because his Kansas AggieS licked Kansas University, the 1880 champs of the Blk Six Missouri Valley Conference, by a score Of 13 to 0. Southern MethOdiStS to Fore Southern Methodist won from Rice Institute, which had oeaten Texas a week before, and now the former looms as prospective Southwest champs. The score of that game-21 to 12-illustrateS the uncertainty of football when forward passing predominates as in that section. Navy eked out a 1877 victory from Delaware. That means plenty of work for Rip Miller before December IL, when the Army must be met. This Saturday the Navy strength can be gagged better, when it tangles with Princeton. Washington and Jefferson was fortunate to beat the strong team that annually rep resentS Western Maryland, 13 to IL, and yillanOva’S cripples were well satisfied with their 1876 margin over Boston Col. lege. Fordham managed to tie Holy Cross in the closing minutes of their New York game. Everyone suspected Gloomy Gil Dobie to have a great team at Cor. nell and he came up to expecta. tionS by outplaying Princeton in every department. Syracuse did even better than I had expected in rolling up 80 points against Flor. ida, and Yale’s margin over Chi cago of q points serves notice that the Ellis are catching on to their Notre Dame attack. Georgia and Southern Califormia rolled up unusually large scores on such old rivals as North Carolina and Oregon. Pittsburgh and Notre Dame tuned up for their struggle this Saturday by holding scoring bees.
