GOLDEN BEAR In BAD SHAPE FOR TROJAN ELEVEN SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 81. U.P) Riding the crest of topheavy vic tory, the Trojans of Southern CAL ifornia will renew their ancient gridiron rivalry with the unsung Bears of California in the first of this years big games” at Berkeley Memorial stadium Saturday. California’s unpleasant memory of an overwhelming defeat in the U. S.-U. S. c. game last year brought the feud to where it out shone in public attention all other coast engagements for the week end-and these include the STAN ford Washington U. game at Seat tie. The omens of good fortune ana a pair Of plunging backs named Moh- Ter and Shaver doubtless will carry off the honors of the day for u S. c., but the hard pressed Bears vow it will not be by any such score as the 74–0 holocaust regis tered last year. Even in the matter of injuries, luck favored Troy. All of their men-Pinckert, Arbelbide, William son, Musick and the others of the laundering herd-are on deck ready for the fray. But at California, Navy Bill Ingram struggled along without Henry Schaldach, Joe Cat tolica and Louis Di Resta, his star backs, who are on the injured list. True, Southern California lost its opening game to st. Mary’S but the Gaels also were triumphant over California and by better score. The only other team to play both was Washington State. The T1ojams defeated the Cougars 38 to s and California won by 13 to 7. So there you are. AS for the Washington Stanford contests, the Cardinals and their mystery men seem to hold the up per hand. Unbeaten and tied put once, the Cards are ahead if sta tistics are any good, which often are not. Glenn (Pop) Warner has never put his first team in for an entire game, and in consequence the eXpertS have been unable to put a price tag on his men. The proven worth of Warmers shock troops, however, made the Palo Altoans favorites. The Oregon U. team, smart!rg under a lacing handed them last week by the Trojans with a score int their animus on North Dakota in an intersectional game at Grand Forks. The 1890 champion Cougars from Washington State ought to win their game with Montana at Missoula, despite their misfortuncs against the stronger conference ag = gregations. Orin Hcllingbery’s men have fought well against heavy odds this season, but it just happens to be someone else’s time to win. University of California at Los Angeles held Northwestern to 1910 in Evanston last week and are favcritics to turn back the Pomona College gridders at Claremont. The Nevada Fresno State game in Reno is a tossup. One of the best Gonzaga teams in years will come to Kezar stadium here Sunday for their annual struggle with St Marys. If the Gaels play no better than they did last week, Gonzaga will give them lots of trouble. But “Slip” Madi, gan probably has attended the task of enlivening his squad, and they should win.

SIXTY-YARD- RUN SCORES VICTORY FOR CALIFORNIA Washington State College Beaten 13–7 in Great Battle PORTLAND, Ore, Oct. 19.-A dizzy, dazzling sixty-yard run by Quarterback Kirwan only a mo- ment after the Cougars had tied the score in the last period gave the University of California victory over Washington State College here Saturday in a sparkling battle Score: California 13, Washington State ‘. Just as the scorers were chalking up the Washington State touch down made on a blocked punt, which tied the count at seven all, Kirwan broke through big open ing at left tackle and raced three fifths of the length of the field for the winning touchdown. Two Cougars fell on Kirwan after he had ripped through the line so fast that he fell flat on his face, but they rolled off him as he bounced up and tore down the field and across the goal. The Washington players apparently thought the ball was dead.
