High School Notes A very efficient library system is being established this year at the Vashon Island high school through the able efforts of Miss Stewart who studied the Librarians course at the University of Washington this sum mer. The fiction reading has been much increased through the donation of nineteen books by Miss Stewart, and thirty-five more new books are to be purchased very soon. set of Americana has already been purchased from the library fund and magazine order list consists of the Readers Digest, Popular Science, Monthly, Literary Digest, Hygea, Nature Maya zine, Atlantic Monthly, Industrial and Vocational Art Magazine, Worlds Work and the Magazine World. The Readers Guide for Periodical Liter allure, which serves as an index for all magazines, will be subscribed to and will help the students in obtain Ing the most recent information on the various topics to their interest. The general appearance Of the library has been improved great deal since the woodwork has been all vanished. An all Island teachers meeting was held at the high school Thursday eve ming, October l. Important business matters were discussed and there was short program. Dinner was served by the third year home economics class. Three new students were welcomed to the Union high school last Monday. They were Nellie Hollayas, Kermit Swenson and Bonnie Mcintyre. This brings our total enrolment to 20s. Bill Smith of Portage has been doing a great deal to put Vashon’s name on the map. He is the boy who caught Merle Hufford’s pass and raced for Wasfington’s only touchdown in their game with Utah last Saturday. Smith was put in the lineup at the last minute, as Linfesty, Wasllington’s regular end, was taken out due to slump, and played q bang up game at the end. The final score was 7–6 in favor of Washington. Coach Bank head, vashon’s football mentor, wit messed the game. At the Puyallup fair, September 26, a clothing contest was held for home economics students of Western Wash ington. There were so entrants. Arlyn Nelson was awarded first prize and Gertrude Allison received honorable mention. Both girls were highly praised for their splendid workman ship.

GREEN TERROR FAR FROM HOYA SET-UP Virginia and Terrapins Out 10 ! 10 Atone--C. U. Gathers Glory In Defeat. Of Virginia in the first of a long string of dif1cult gridiron Struggiles for both universities. The Blue and Gray and Black and Gold encountered more opposition last week than either expected, but both felt sure they would win and did win. However, from now on the story may be entirely different, as they are likely to find themselves against teams that should battle them down to the last ditch. And there is not much doubt that both Virginia and Western Mary land will come here with lot Of zest TO start the do’ngs. A few days ago 1t seemed there should be little to choose between the George town. Western Maryland and Virginia. Maryland games, but the results of last Saturday indicate that the former may be the better contest. western Mary land has not yet played but 1t is known to be strong, end Georgetown showed well In its opener with Lebanon Valley. A s far as Maryland and Virginia are “A concerned, just the contrary Is true Not only did Maryland fail to cover itself with glory against Washing ton College, but Virginia did not do any better against Randolph Macon OF course, there is no thought that Virginia and Maryland are in class with washington College and Randolph Macon, and IL may be that they will play a better foot ball game than Georgetown and western Maryland. but certainly the results Of last week do not Justify any such expectation L. l.-E 4HaA coming of Saturday 1t Is singing urder two consecutive defeats by Western Maryland and the only thing that will give relief is a CORY scalp. The Blue and Gray firmly believes that it is GO ing to mop up with Western Maryland, and there Is good reason for its conf dence. It’s squad is in far better shape now than it was last season when 1t lost to the Green and Gold outfit. Put because GEORGETOWN is confident ~ there Is no reason to think that Western Maryland is not well able TO take care Of itself. That school lost several good men, but 1t also had some good material to take their places Dunn and Mentally, who were on the FRESH man eleven, are fine backs. and sew eral of those left over from 1880 are brilliant There is not much doubt that Quarterback Ekaitis, who gradu- ,ated, will be missed but every other hole probably has been plugged so that 1t will hold water just as well as last year 1t may turn out that Bates position at end is an exception, but actually, as team, the probabilities are that Western Maryland is going to be just as good as 1t was when 1t whipped Georgetown last October Coach Tom Mills has been working since he began practice with the West ern Maryland game as his first objective. He has drilled his players to have them in their best shape for the COM ing Saturday and probably Georges town will take the field with the bsst eleven it has ever had in uniform as early as the first Saturday In October. VIRGINIA was tied by Randolph v Macon in a game in which Vir- ginia gained q lot of ground, and in which Randolph Macon apparently could do very little on offense. That type Of game probably will cause the Orange and Blue players to work like trojans this week to get ready for O real battle Saturday. virginia viii be a much more difficult team to play this week than it would have been had it won by four or five touchdowns. And Maryland faces the game in much the same situation as Virginia 1t did nothing TO glory ebout last week, and 1t has long vav to go to reach the point it would like. It may be that Virginia and Maryland, filled alike with a desire to atone for their poor work of Saturday, may stage a great struggle. TALthUDET and American Univer- VI sity open their schedules this week, the former With Loyola at Baltimore and the. latter with Lynehburg College at Lynchburg. George play here, the former having Zion Col lege for a game in the Central Sta dunn, while the latter Is TO play City College Of New York in the Brookland Stadium. The most creditable performance of the local elevens Saturday was that Of Catholic University at Boston The Brooklanders, although whipped by four touchdowns to one, actually were close to victory in a game In which they were hardly conceded chance They held the lead. 7 to 6. for three quarters. but finally succumbed to greater physical power and fresh men The kind Of foot ball G. u. played is a tribute TO the ability Of its coach and praiSeworthy for the players Catholic U. has far better foot bah team than it had in 1880. George Washington wen its game by a big margin, just as 1t and everybody else expected The visiting eleven was not in the same class with the Colonials in any respect. T OOKfNG over the country at foot IL ball games in various and widely scattered sections, one is reminded somewhat of remark Of Bill Fetzer. former coach Of North Carolina and now coach at William and Mary After his team has barely whipped mitch smaller school Fetzer said, well, there’s none Of them easy any more, they’re all hard” OF course Fetzer did not mean literally that every team all the time is difficult to defeat, but that any time a big team schedules a game with a so-called smaller one 1t takes chance Of running into real snag. That happened yesterday in many games. out in the Far West, University of Southern California went Gown before the 81. Mays eleven, despite the fact that the Trojans hive been touted ell during practice As having their greatest eleven OF al tlfie. in its game with Santa Clara, California barely won b. staging a fourth period rally to score one touchdown and win By TO 2. Uni versity Of Washington wss victor over Utah by only Z 10 g. and Stanford was held TO q tie by the Olympic Club. Not an impressive showing by any means for the big fellows Of the Pacific Coast. Coming toward the East, 1t is OBJ served that Minnesota barely beat North Dakota by Is to and Indiana was q victor over Ohio University by only one point. Here along the At Iantic seaboard, Penn State went down before waynesblirg by 7 TO o. Virginia Military Institute got whipped by Uni versity OF Richmond and Virginia was
