DUKE DEFEATED, 20 BY SOUTH CAROLINA Gamecock Eleven, With Six Sophs in Lineup, Registers in Second Quarter. COLUMBIA, s. c., September 26.- Led by Earl Clary. a galloping half back, South Carolina Gamecocks triumphed over a foot ball machine from Duke by a 7-to-0 score here today. For the first time since 1929, Wallace Wade, the new Duke coach who went to the North Carolina institution from Alabama, knew defeat for one OF his teams. The lone talley came early in the second period. A Duke tumble gave the ball to South Carolina 18 yards from the goal line. Then Clary, a sophomore playing his first varsity game. put on steam. He went around right end for ID yards. Two plays later he was called on, but could garner only a yard, the yard his teammate, Dick Shinn, had lost. On the fourth play with wide end run around his left end he swished past tacklers and sped across the last stripe untouched. The South Carolinians threatened again in the third quarter and drove the ball from their own 40-yard line to Dukes 14-yard marker. only to lose it on a tumble. Dukes most serious threat came in the first quarter after an exchange of punts had given the Blue Devils the ball on South Cardinals 2O-yard stripe, but the forward wall of the Gamecocks proved too sturdy A crowd OF $4,000 persons watched from the fair ground wooden bowl as Coach Billy Laval’s untried sophomores proved their mettle against the more experienced Duke aggregation. Six of the men who started for South Carolima were playing for the first time against another varsity aggregation.
