FIGURE $1,000. COLLEGE LADS ON GR|D|RON | News SerVlce.) BOSTON, Sept. 21.-Football squads throughout the country, with between one and three weeks of hard work behind them, square away this week to open ing games. There was scattered skirmishing along the gridiron front over the weekend, notably Stanford’S 46–0 win over a West Coast Army team and Virginia’S S 18–0 victory over Roanoke, but the coming Saturday will find practically all the big teams in action. In all there have been 1877 foot ball games scheduled throughout the country for Saturday, with 38 games scheduled Friday. That means. of course, that more than 40 football teams will play first or second games and that approximately 10000 young COL legians will be ready to swing through four periods of man-toman contact. The figures are somewhat stag gering, and certainly show the vital role the sport plays in the training Of the young men of the land between the ages of 18 and % years. If one was to make a rough guess of the number of school boys also playing the game, l venture to say the figure would run well up in six figures. It, of course, will be impossible in these articles to discuss all the college teams, but outStanding teams and games and players will be weekly touched upon. This weeks schedule finds teams like Brown, Dartmouth, Chicago, Min nesota, Colgate, Columbia, New York University and Fordham. Cornell, Penn State, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh, Michigan State, Virginia, Texas, California, Southern Cali fornia and Stanford all playing AoA ~ CdoJ SdAHCo. New Star at Yale So far there has been little way in which to get a line on the actual development of most of these teams. Most of the col lege teams had scrimmages with second varsitieS on Saturday, the scoring mostly in DrODOrtiOn to the length of the scrimmage and the strength of the second teams. Harvard, for instance, scored 40 points in an offensive scrimmage of an hour and Is minutes, dur ing which more than 100 players were in action. Yale, with Joe Crowley. hitherto not noted as a ball carrier, running wild, scored 26 points, and teams like Dartmouth, Army and others had equally long sessions.
