M|DD|ES’ ATTACK WARNING TO ARMY Annapolitans Play Cautious Game, Keeping Score Be- low Possibilities. DHnADELPHIA, December 6. r. Navy set a string of storm i signals for all of Army to see today as a surprisingly versatile squad Of midshipmen battered and passed Pennsylvania’s fair eleven into absolute submission before an enthusiastic crowd of $4,000. Whipped four times this season, rated hardly formidable rival for the power full Cadets in the charity climax of the Eastern campaign in New York next Saturday, Navy pulled the plug on an amazingly potent offensive and smothered the QuakerS, 26 to 0. The score might have been twice that large if the Midshipmen had chosen to take chances instead Of kicking and waiting for scores until they all but dropped In their laps. Penn Offensive Weak. So completely was Navy in complete command Of the situation without the aid of q single Marine, that the Penn sylvania team that scored 20 points in the Notre Dame rout made Just three first downs and gained only Is yards more than 1t lost from scrimmage. Two desperate passes, one COM plete because of interference, and q 12-yard run by Capt. Dick Gentle on fake kick from behind his own goal line, provided the entire Pennsylvania offensive for the afternoon. ,atof Lou Krp SsS1S Navy ts dynamo .ssr st right ht miserable in a scoreless first half that saw the rejuvenated squad from An napolis push Penn all over the field, but refuse to take chances deep in the enemy’s territory. It wasn’t until Kirn’s substitute, 170-pound young ster named Tommy Hurley, q second classman from New York City, came into the backfield for the second half, with a substitute quarterback. Rusty helm, that Navy began to 60 places and do things in q manner that sur priSed the roaring regiments from the Naval Academy. Four Advantages Count. Four times in the second half, Navy took advantage Of breaks as avidly half and converted each opportunity into q touchdown. Nal Tuttle, Nays crack center, smothered q ball that bounced of Penn’s back in motion, Gentle, on the Quaker 37-yard line and pass, Hurley to Williams, carried to the 16. Hurley blasted straight down through the center alley in short takes until he doomed over from the 3-yard line. Blimp Bowstrom, Nays big kicking tackle, booted the goal from placement. Jack Cannon, wheel horse Of the Navy backfield, then helped himself to the first of his pair Of touchdowns. He scored the first on q 5-yard burst through center near the end Of the third period after williams intercepted on Penn’s 20-yard line q pass that Jerry Ford, substitute Quaker back, tried to complete from behind his own goal. The second, early in The fourth quarter, was q personal venture. Cannon reached up and grabbed another desperate Penn toss on the Red and Blue 42-yard line. He i’m mediately shot q long pass to Ryng, best Of the Navy ends, in Penn’s Toyard line, and In two whacks at CEN ter personally escorted the leather across the goal. Williams offered a variation to the usual procedure by tossing short pass to Byng for the extra point. Navy’s substitutes scored the final touchdown near the end of the final quarter.
