Fordham is the sole major East ern eleven without defeat; Nctre Dame, Northwestern and Mar quette stick their heads aloft the Midwest corn fields; Alabama alone rises above the dew in Dixie. and Washington State, Oregon and Utah pillar the horizon In the Far West. Notre Dame. topping triumpns over such good teams as South ern Methodist, Carnegie and Pitt with a 60-to-20 rout of Penn on Saturday, ranks as the Outstanding outfit Of the nation. FordhaIn was hard pressed to win, 13 to z. over Detroit, Oregon barely eased out a 7-to-O win over University of California, Los Angeles branch, and Mar | Quette tasted some of the same in beating Iowa, to 0. Alabama was picked to win over Florida but the 20-to-O score was not forecast. northwestern merely gilded the lily in downing o weak Indiana squad. IS to 0. Utah rolled up IL to against Colorado College and Washing ton State breezed it 80 to z over Idahoe Army’s 13-tO-O crush of ILL., nOis, Colgate’s 54.tO-O jellying Of Columbia, DartmOuth’s 43- tO-14 push-in of Allegheny and COrneII’s 54-tO-O flood over Hobart were quite rs ex- pected and Yale’s horse collar ing of Alfred. 66 to 0. was nOt enough to make anyone run from his shadow. | | The big upset of the day came i when Lehigh took to the clouds and added high insult to grevious injury by beating decadent Prince ton, 13 to 8, and you did not hear anyone shouting from the roofs last week that Ohio State would beat Navy ~ to 0, Bucknen lower away Villanova 20 to IA, Nebraska kayo Kansas Is to 0, Williams stop Wesleyan. 40 to 9, or SYRIA cuse being unable to do more than hold Penn State to a score less tie. Games that made the alumni start writing letters were Harry Newrinan’S 6-to-3 passing triumph for Michigan against Harvard, Pitts 7-to-6 snatching over Car negie Tech as well as Lafayette’s 81 to Rutgers 26, Georgetown’s 20 to Boston Colleges 10 and Georgia’s to New York Uni7ersity’S 6. Knute Rockne must be outdOing Gil Dobie in weeping ana wailing and gnaShing Of molarSs considering Notre Dame plays Southern California, for the Tro- JAMS dragged the Golden Bears Of proud California in the dust 7Atoo. Stanford showed something of a comeback to win 25-to-T over Washington. Duke arched quite q few eyebrows beating Kentucky, 14.tO-7. Vanderbilt won 6-tO-O over Georgia Tech, Tulane sent back Auburn, 21.tO0, and Furman beat South Carolina, 14-tO-O. Other Southern tri- umphS were Texas over Bay l0r, 2O.tO-O, Texas Christian over Rice, 2O-tO-O, Southern Methodist over Texas A. and NJ, 13-tO-7, and Houston Teachers over Texas Aggies. 1S-tO-O. In the Midwest Michigan State won from N. Dakota State 19-to-1l, Minnesota, 59-to-O from South Dakota, Missouri 14-to-O from Iowa State, Purdue from Chicago 26-to-7. and wisconsin from S. Dakota State 58-to-7, all of which failed to move us even yard. The old-fashioned fans who have been bowling for the thrills of a touchdown, claiming mod. ern football devoted too much energy to defense and not enough to offense, may now lower their voices. Notre Danes scoring looked like q st. Patrick’s Day parade and the Trojans-Bears tilt on the Coast was a test in arithmetic,
