YALE YANo UIsuEs BRoIyN. The Blue Beats the Brown and White pathizers yesterday afternoon in the football game played at Yale field be- tween Captain Murphy’s men and Browns pigskln chasers. It has been noticed by the general public that after the direst prophecies of calamities in athletic contests, and the most mourn ful lamentations by Yale coachers and packers, the Yale team, be it football, baseball or general athletics, in the very next contest, rolls up a big score and “snatches victory from defeat” Yesterdays game was in illustration of this fact. Since the football season began all sorts of rumors of weakness and sickness, and other disastrous con- ditions in the Yale team, have been go- ing the rounds, and it was held to be almost certain that Brown would yes terday score and was deemed highly probable that the Rhode Islanders might even win. Owing 10 this fact, great interest in yesterdays game was evidenced, and the crowd at the field when play began was the largest ever seen there in attendance at minor game. A crowd of fully 2,500 persons filled the bleachers and every available coign of vantage along the side lines, and many swell equipages occupied coach positions. At o’clock, after the men of each team had tumbled about the gridiron to get limbered up, the game was call ed The lineup for the start was as follows: Yale-Chamberlain, center; Murray, right guard; Sutphin, left guard; Mur- phy, right tackle (captain); Rogers, left tackle; Hazen, left end; Bass, right end; Hinkey full-back; Ely, quarter back; Van Evey, right half-back; Ben jamin left half-back. Brown--Coombs center; Wheeler, left guard; Thayer right guard; Casey, left tackle; Locke, right tackle; Chase. right end; Summergill, left end; Hall, full-back; Colby, quarterback (cap- tain); Murphy, left half-back; Fultz, right half back. Yale won the toss and chose the north goal, thereby having the wind. Fultz kicked off, and after a scramble Colby of Brown got the ball and started to tear down the field, but was bowled over by Murphy at the center or the field. At this point of the game Sut- phin was injured and Chadwick, Yale’s heavy guard from whom much is ex- pected this season, was put in his place. Brown gained ten yards around the end and punted Hinkey caught. After sharp play Hazen fell on the ball at Browns twenty-five-yard line. Yale bucked the center for good gains, and wards Rogers was showed across for touch down, from which Hinkey kicked goal After the lineup Yale by sharp work rushed the ball down the field and had the ball almost over the line for an other touchdown, when time was called on the first half. At the beginning of the second half Connor was substituted for Hazen at ! left end. Fultz kicked off and Hinkey caught. Yale made repeated gains around both of Browns ends, and also rushed the center for good ground. The chief gains were made by Benjamin in two runs, the first one netting ten yards and the other five yards, the last run landing the ball at Browns five yard line, where Benjamin was drop ped by $. beautiful tackle by Casey. By bucking the center Yale forged up to the goal and Rogers was finally sent over for the second touchdown. Hin- | key kicked the goal, making the score l then 12 to 0 in favor of Yale. ss Fultz after the lineup kicked down l to Yale’s fifteen yard line, but the ball | was quickly carried back to the thirty l ,.J Tn, qff1in grabbed the ball while it was out of play, and started on a tear down the i field and pumped across the goal line | all to no vaial--much to the chagrin of Benjamin, who thought the ball was in play. By irresistible rushes and foxy play Yale worked the ball rapidly down to Browns thirty-five yard line, and then hit up Browns center for repeated but slight gains. In one of the scrub bles Benjamin picked up the ball, this time in play, and by good sprint car- ried it to within three yards of Browns | goal. before he was nailed. Van Evey was quickly pushed over for a touch down, and Hinkey’s goal brought the score up to IS to 0 in favor of Yale. After the lineup Yale played faster | ball than pTeVlOuSiy III tllG Sdl1e, diil seemed determined to score again in the small amount of time remaining in the half. The ball was forced down to Browns twenty-five yard line, when Brown got the ball and punted back to | center. Yale then tried the center for gains, and followed them up by big gains around each end in rapid success sion, untn the ball was on Browns ] five yard line, with only two minutes of play remaining. Just then Van Evey was injured, and Goodwin, who made the touchdown in the game with Trinity and is a good man, but of doubtful staying powers, was put in his place. Brown put up tremendous de- fense at this point, and by repeated heavy assaults on the center Yale was | only able to gain two yards before Brown got the ball on downs, and was l about to punt when time was called. l Yale’s game was at every point ag- ] gressive, and Brown was kept on the | defensive at every play. At no time was Yale’s goal in any danger, and the reason of this was not because Brown played poorer ball than usual, but be- cause Yale was playing old fashioned Yale ball with that famous pluck and bull log perseverance which has won many desperate game for the blue.
