Two real coaches got q break over the weekend just passed. Today finds them still enthused over upsets created by their respective elevens. GEORGETOWN University was an odds-on short-ender when 1t tackled Michigan State at Grit fifth Stadium Friday night. And Coach Tommy Mills was virtually alone in his belief that the Mid WesternerS could be stopped. That John Scalzi and . greatly improved hne-which apparently has responded to Mills handling-regiStered . 1913 triumph is now his tory. But the memory Of that spectacle Is still a glOri. GUS one. Nor can one well overlook the amazing jolt administered I’m beaten Cornell by Lou Little’S Columbia Lions. Only two weeks ago these same Columbians had been trampled into the dust by Dartmouth. But Little, as is his custom, worked wonders almost overnight. Assisted by the return Of a few regulars, who were not available for the Dartmouth game. the for mer Georgetown coach Steered his men to a stunning victory over Gil Dobie’s proud Crimson. Both Little and Mills, his successor, are result getterS. Little, during his adminiStra- tiOn at the Hilltop, worked wonders with the HOyas. Mills promises to carry on where Lou left off. Columbia, which is in the process Of building up athletics, was fortunate to land a man Of Little’s football experience and executive ability. And, by the same token, Georgetown could not have signed a more able man than Mills. Among the $4,000 gathered at Griffith Stadium Friday night were a Skeptical few who always insist that the team scoring the most first downs outplays its opponent. In this respect Michigan State outclassed Georgetown. Michigan, however, had no Scalxi to average 145 yards in two SprintS across the enemy goal. Nor could it penetrate q stubborn HOya defense in the pinCheS. In other words Michigan-liter ally speaking did NOT outdo Georgetown. The 14–13 count proves it. This first down complex. which seems to grip many Of our foot ball fanatics, is strongly remind full Of a baseball game where one team, outhit by the other. never theleSS wins out-SometimeS by 8 Sizeable score. Oklahoma City, for instance downed DaviS-E ElkinS at Elkins, w Va, Saturday, 1872. Yet the WeSt Virginians made 10 first downs while holding their opponent Il four.
