VANDERBILT VICTOR, $50 Defeat of Chattanooga Reveals Raw Edges on Commodores. NASHVILLE, Tenn, September 81 Hp.--Wtth practically every man on ILe squad breaking into the lineup, Coach Dan McGugin’s 1880 Vanderbilt gridiron machine opened the season here today. with a sluggishly earned 59-to-O victory over the University of Chattanooga MoccaSins. The Commodores exhibited none of the smoothness that had been expected. Although functioning fairly well on the defense. the Gold and Black eleven was surprisingly weak in the running of its plays, with the exception of the for ward pass. Despite the ragged show ing made in line plays, the Cominodores, outweighing considerably the light Moccasin eleven, gathered together enough punch to trample the S, I. A. A. champions. Vanderbilt scored four times on passes, once ON an intercepted pass and once on straight foot ball after a blocked punt had put the Gold and Black near the Chattanooga goal line.
