There Was Much Kicking and Interchanging of PuntS. VERY LOOSELY PLAYED GAME In the First Annual Freshman Strug. : : gle Harvard Lost to the Penn. -: >. sylvania Team. NEW YORK, n. Y, NOV. To- ate defeated the Orange Athletic Club football team to-day in a loosely played game by the score of 26 to Q. The day was clear and favorable for good contest, but the soggy condition of Manhattan field made the footing very unstable, and as conseouence neither side was able to show up in the best form. The game was characterized by great deal of kicking on both sides, and on their -interchanges of punts the two elevens were very evenly matched during the first part OF the. game, but later on Yale succeeded in. gaining considerable ground by this means. For some time after the ball was put in play the Jersey men seemed to be getting a little the best of their opponents, going through their line and around the ends for some very good gains. But it did not take long for Y ale to become acquainted with tlAir style-of play, and thereafter Yale’s possession OF the. ball was almost sure guarantee of its being advanced well on toward the Orange goal line. Orange was clearly outplayed at every point. Especlally during the last half their line was utterly unable to Withstand the onslaughts of Old EH’s backs. Behind the line the formation of the men was so slow that their opponents were able to nip the play in the bud. On one or two occasions when the Orange goal was in danger, the team massed together and for a time prevented Yale from scoring. But when the latter put forth their best efforts, Orange quickly gave way before them. On receiving a Kick from Orange, Yale would form. their interference quickly and in this way gained considerable ground. During the second half Yale had found the weak spots in the Orange line, and, when. the latter attempted to kick, the Yale tackles were often on hand to prevent the play. Two. of the .touchdowns scored were al most: directly due to blocked kicks. Orange on the other hand, had not a single blocked kick that could be put down TO their credit. On the whole, Yale very much excelled Orange in the work of her backs, while her line proved sufficiently strong to prevent any great gains through it: PHILADELPHIA, Pa: Nov. 16.-The first ,annual football game between the freshman teams of Harvard and Pannsylvania was played to-day on Franklin fields, and the boys from Cambridge won by a score. of II to 4. Both teams played surprisingly good and fast football for elevens made up Of Young players. Harvard bad much the heavier team, and as the ground was sim ply a quagmire from recent rains, the weight of the crimson gave them a big advantage. In the first half Harvard tore up Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania was on the defensive the whole time and play was entirely in their territory. In the second Harvard weakened perceptibly and the play was fairly even. LINCOLN, NEBR., Nov. 16.-The Kan sas University triumphed over Nebraska on the football field to-day, and by her championship from the. local team, which has. had 1t since a year ago.
