GREEN EASTERN :. LEADER BY DdVlS y. walsh The football capital OF America might be found today. among the stately spires that rise above the campus just outside South Bend. 1t might be the tiny hamlet they call Hanover, n. H., nesting in q setting that is almost priRitive. 1t might be beautiful Los Angeles; somber. half-toned Pittsburgh; his toric knoXville; quaint, old New Orleans; the eastern outpost on the edge Of the desert, Salt Lake City; or that sprightly charmer of the northwest, Minneapolis. 1t might be any of these and it 4 might be none. For while Notre Dame, Dartmouth. Southern Cali. fornia, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Tu.E lane. Utah and Minnesota remained undefeated in weekend games that were all-consequential, so did Purdue, Texas. California and Detroit, while Cornell drew a blank alto gether and so preserved it’s record / intact. All we have TO go on today | il that Dartmouth, having ruined Harvard, must be conceded to | be one of two leading teams | i’m the East snd that the other is Pittsburgh | That Southern California; - TO ! 0 victory over Stanford gives it \ most Of the authority on the coast; THAT Texas locks the part as the IL, tho thar Tula neo’s disposal of Georgia Tech stakes ut to sn equal ranking with Tennessee. in the South; that Purdue, with An1ther victory over Chi Cago, is in sole charge of the big ten at the moment and so on. Included among the etcetera, so to speak, is the fact that NOueA Dame survived another of .its BigW moments, this time beating CarnegieS Tech by a touchdown; that Ne braska and Missouri, having played a to tie, must look TO the remainder of their schedules for the Y Big Six championship and that Utah, winner over Colorac>1 Aggies, still is the best bet in the rising, young Rocky Mountain Conference. With the exception of Nebraska, beaten by Pitt, and naturally Missouri,, these form the 100 per cent. group in the football lists, although California, in view OF its scoreless tie with st. Mary’s, actually be. . longs with Fordham and DAVIS Elkins. co-stars in Saturdays tie; Boston College, w. and j., Illinois, Ohio State, Missouri, Southern Methodist and Villanova. Tie scores have deprecated the championship status of this coterie and, in some cases. have disposed of them alto gether. 1t was Ohio States scoreless tie with Indiana on Saturday, for in stance, that makes possible Purdues position today. 1t was one of the major upsets of the day, of which there were three others. The only one that really counted was Army’s remarkable defeat by Yale. The others saw Princeton tie the Navy and Florida beat Georgia, af. ter losing to Tech the week before. Carnegie Tech. Stanford, Chicago, Harvard and the Army were beaten for the first time while the tie suffered by Ohio State was almost as dis aStrOuS. 1t meant that, instead Of fighting Purdue and Minnesota for the Zig Ten lead, it was embroiled with Illinois for the right to remain the runner up. The Buckeyes actually were outplayed from the moment that Faunce headed into the open for As yards early in the game and they deserved no better than they got. Notre Danes first victory in three years over Tech was mads possible by Karcis’ weak punt in the third period; yet Teach itself probably will concede today thet the better team won. So probably will Stanford in the case of South ern California. since the Trojans held the Warner outfit for downs inside the 5-yard line in the first period and thereafter dominated the game. California, winner over the Olympic Club by 21–19 IL the only coast team between U. S. c. and the title now. 1t was a one-man defeat that Yale gave the Army. which was 13 points to the good when Alhio Booth came on the field and eight points to the bad when he left. Able scored them all. This 140. pound whippet handled the ball, one way or another, on every play, and climaxed his performance with 7O-yard run for the winning touchdown. Marsters beat Harvard, although 1t must be admitted that quite football team scored 90 points for Dartmouth in the final period. In all, Dartmouth has scored 75S points this season agalnt the lone touchdown that Harvard got on Saturday. Southern California has scored 216.
