CORNELL TR|UMPHS OVER TIGERS, 1877 IthacanS Defeat Princeton Eleven After Losing for 27 Years. r ITHACA, N. Y, October 19.-The Red the merest ripple in recent years, i rose again In its old might today to sweep over Princeton and warn the foot ball world that a new pigskin storm is brewing on the shores of Lake Cayuga. With a fine attack, pass defense that was brilliant, and sturdy for ward wall that rose to every emergency this 1929 throwback to the more glorious days of Cornells history whipped the stubborn Tigers Is to z, the first time a Cornell eleven has turned that trick in 81 years. Back in the foot ball dark ages of 1902 Princeton team lost to Cornell to 5, but not since then. Out Of the victory rose new Cornell heroes that promise much for the future. A tall, timber sophomore, Miles Stevens, teamed in sensational fashion with Norman Scott, piledriver of the big Red backfield, while Sam Wakeman brilliant tackle and captain, played in powerful line like man inspired. Decision Never In Doubt. Despite the cloSeness of the victory. the decision seemed never in doubt, the Princeton Warriors, beaten last week in a surprise finish by Brown, never could punch through the big Red for ward wall when yards gained meant first downs within reaching distance of the Cornell goal. 1t took Ed Wittmer, Furnishing Tiger back, to count Princeton’s single touch down on a lone, but brilliant effort, the outstanding play of the afternoon. Taking the first kickoff after Cornell’s opening touchdown In the first period, the burly line snasher tucked the ball | away on his own 10-yard line and I never stopped until the Cornell goal was behind him. Wittmer sailed straight down one sideline, tented toward the center to lure the defense over, and then continued his parade 80 yards to the goal , line without a restraining hand being laid upon him. All through the renaming three periods Big Ed fought | to get loose again, but his days work | was done. Stevens Shines for Cornell. ! Stevens, the brilliant sophomore, scored Cornell’s second touchdown and made the first possible. He scooped up Scarlett’s tumble on the Princeton 20 yard line In the opening period, smashed through to the 12-yard line and lugged the leather again z yards to the 2-yard line after short forward pass made | first down. Scott took the ball over for the score. Again in the second period. after Wittmer had made the tie score possible and the game had developed into a brilliant struggle about midfield, Ste vens broke loose. This time he shared ,, one of Wittmer’s passes on his own 43-yard line and raced deep into Princeton territory to the 15-yard line. The Tigers held brilliantly for three downs, but Stevens wouldn’t have 1t that way. On the fourth down he dove across the Princeton goal, leaped into a group of the Tigers and grabbed How ard JohnSon’s pass for a touchdown right from under their noses.
