But in addition to these three games, which it was apparent last week were likely to be hard fought, others developed into real struggles and one a big upset. Down at Athens, Ga, the University of Georgia, stirring up the whole South over its approaching game with Yale, sat meekly down before it’s first opponent, when Oglethorp University marched up from Atlanta and won by IA to Z. By all accounts of the game, 1t was not fiuke victory, either, and Georgia simply was outplayed. 1t was a hafd blow to the defeated eleven, coming as it did on the eve of game with Yale. a game in which Georgia was expected to uphold the prestige OF Southern foot ball. Pennsylvania got a fill of good foot ball from little Franklin and Marshall It eked out a victory by two touchdowns to one, only because one OF its backs grabbed a Kickoff and ran 80 yards for a touchdown. The QuakerS did not make the showing they expected, or else the Franklin and Marshall eleven was far stronger than it ordinarily IS Penn probably will have to go at 1ar better gait in its future contests II II is to accomplish what it hopes 10 against such elevens as 1t is to meet. Brown Is Surprised. Brown University ran into snag at Springfield, the Y. M. c. A. College there proving too strong by margin OF 7to6. Brown probably never had much thought of opening its season that way. Another game in New England. Wnicn, while not between two especially strong teams, developed plenty of close play was that in which Massachusetts, Aggies won from Bates by to 6. incidentally, the Penn Franklin and Marshall game was not the only close one played around Philadelphia, as Dickinson ana Ursinus went through to tie. while Swarthmore barely beat out Drexei II to 8. Down South the Southern Methodist University was held to 13 to Is tie oy Howard Payne, and Mississippi A. ana M, could get only 0 to tie with Henderson Brown as its opponent. Iness were cases of schools with couple OF thousand students failing against mucn smaller institutions, numbering perhaps enrollments OF four or five hunoreo. the only school that had battle on its hands, as University of Nevada sue cumbed to Brigham Young University by 7 to 10. Georgetown and Maryland won their oneninR games by fair scores, Wnlle Catholic University was beaten by Boston College by one touchdown MOI withstanding it was defeated, Catnonc University probably deserves more creolt for its showing than either OF the Two schools that we’re victOrS. The BrooKlanders took a long journey right at the opening of It’s season to meet team generally considered to be in a much stronger class, but notW1tnstanoing that carried the battle to their OPP ponents and probably would have got 6-to-6 tie had a decision Of one OF the officials not caused condition Wnlcn gave Boston College its second touch down. The game unquestionaoly SHOWS that Coach Jack McAullf1e knew wnat he was talking about when he said before the season opened that c. U. would have a much stronger eleven this Fall. Hoyas, Terrapins Unpublished. While Georgetown and Maryland were rather easy victors, it is said that neither did anything especially wonder full. They were against weak eleVens much opposition as they apparently did. A good deal of shaping up Will have to be done If the Blue and Gray and Old Liners are to do well in their games this week. Georgetown is not facing such a proposition as Maryland is. but even SO it will not be in position to fool around much, because western Maryland Is not going to be a setup. Under ordinary conditions Titles team should beat the Western Maryland eleven by three touchdowns, but 1t will not be able to do any loafing between now and game time. MARYLAND meets in North Carolina q real foot ball team. In fact, it Is doubt full II right now there are many better elevens in the East, and unless the Old Liners want to get pushed around quite a good deal they had better get down to brass tacks and put in some of the hardest ticks they have ever given to preparation for a foot ball game. Nays 47-to-0 score against DeniSon indicates that the Midshipmen are ready this Fall with one of their most powerful combinations. During the frs
