“ December Smashing West Points defenSes to bits with rip-roaring, bewildering attack that kept up it’s momentum from start to finish, Stanford put the Army foot ball team to rout today and won the most spectacular interSectional battle of the year by the lop-s1ded score of 26 to 0. While a capacity crowd of $4,000 looked on in establishment, the last hope and pride of the Eastern gridiron was smothered, completely outplayed, out generated and soundly trounced by what turned out to be Cardinal cyclone sweeping all. Led by their stalwart fullback and CAPTAIN. Biff Hoffman, the robust grid iron pupils of Pop Warner staged sur prise attack at the start, put the Army on the defensive and then proceeded to administer one crushing blow after another as Red eagle, the soldier ace, fought CALAMITY but unsucceSsfully IN losing cause. eagle Furnished Thrills. eagle gave the Army its few thrills and at times broke, like lightning, through the clouds of West Point dis aSter. but the Louisiana flash was I’M able to offset the smashing. batterlng Stanford attack which four times crossed the West Point goal and threat ened to score a half dozen more times. It was the case of a great team against gallant band led by the East’s outstanding ball carrier and there was no question OF the result from start to finish. Behind for ward wall that packed tremendous power. especially in its center trio, Stanford’s fleet array of backs. led by Hoffman, Lud Frentrup and Bob Sims, ran the Army ragged. Hoffman, a triple-threat star whose performances eclipSed those OF eagle, got the Cardinal thrust off to flying start, helped fight off the Army’s second period counter attack, then returned in the final half to share the blaze of closing glory with Sims and Frentrup who scored the fourth touchdown on 64-yard dash that was the most SEN sational play of the game. Helps Vests Edge on East. Stanford’s impressive triumph was not so surprising as its clear-cut mar gin of superiority in every department of play. Coming on top of Oregon States one-sided defeat of New York University on the same field two days ago. the Cardinal victory adds to the most disastrous rout Eastern forces have ever accepted at the hands of Far-Western foes Little things like cross country trips and the opposition of two of the East’s foremost teams apparently had no terrors for | these bewildering invaders. | Stanford, beaten out in the race for Pacific Coast honors, looked like as | powerful and effective foot ball ma L zfus. - h. +rxy fAIn Tt1n Cardinals had everything-a great line with super-stars forming the keystone | in Heineicke at center and RobeSky and | Post, and a deceptive attack that al | ternately featured Hoffman, Sims and | Frentrup, as we’ll as Wilton and Lewis, all fast and shifty. This attack constantly was punching holes through the Army defense big enough for a truck. The backs were continually out lin the clear” in sue cession of long gains. The Arrny’s counter efforts were gallant and effective enough to stop Stanford’s drives on five occasions. with the ball anywhere ! from West Points 1-yard line to the | 20-yard line, but this sturdy defense couldn’t stop them all. ReinforcementS were rushed into the soldier line by the dozen, but to little avail Margin in First Downs. Stanford outrushed the Army by the one-sided margin of 372 yards to 113, totaling 26 first downs to only for the Cadets. The Cardinals aerial at tack, engineered by Hoffman, added 1874 | yards, while the losses of eagle and Hutchinson Melted 102. | The game was less than three min utes old when Stanford launched its | first drive into Army territory, sweep , ing &c yards on a combination of / Sims and Hoffman before it was checked on the 1-yard line. West ! Point might have escaped trouble had / Murrels punting been more effective, ! but poor kicks gave the Cardinals two more chances, the last of which Hoff- | man capitalized by catapulting through the line for touchdown to end % ! yard drive. | After stopping another Stanford adj vance on their 9-yard mark, the Cadets started the second quarter with their most spectacular attack. eagle twice ! figured in two of the games most thrill | ing plays, but the Army chances van iShed when his pass to the goal line / was ruled incomplete because of the anxiety of too many Army men to grab ! the ball. On this play eagle started an end run, whirled as he was boxed, dashed backward and finally passed the ball on the dead run, as he was forced to do several times. Shortly afterward eagle got losses on long, spinning dash, side-stepping and stiff -arming at least half the Stanford team as he fought his way forward some 40 yards. His headgear was grabbed off and he was upset once, but regained his feet to plunge forward in whirl of would-be tacklers. Nearly half OF his gain went for naught however when it was ruled he had stepped out of bounds after going % yards. STAN CONTINUED on Second Page)
