MICHIGAN BLASTS IOWA HOPE OF TIE HaWkeyes Pass Out of Bio Ten Race of Wolverines Triumph, 10 to 7. A mn ARBOR, Mich, November “a “ -Michingan and Iowa PACKED “A all the drama of a champion 4 ship battle in their game here today when the Wolverines came from behind to win 10 to I, and effectively wreck any hopes the Hawk eyes may have had Of sharing in a tie for the 1923 Western Conference foot ball title. Outplayed, apparently outclassed, in the first few minutes of play, when the Hawkeyes displayed all their reputed bone-crushing power. Michigan rallied to turn back the visitors, first to make place kick and then touch down. It was the determination of slender little halfback. Alvin Dahlem of Jack son, Mich, that brought Michigan its triumph. 1t was the age-old “83’‘-a fake place kick formation-that gave him the vehicle. Early in the third period Michigan found hole between the Iowa rightguard and tackle. and vicious slams at this point by Capt. Rich, Gembis and Truskowski sent the ball to the Iowa 12-yard line. Dahlem’s Touchdown Tells. A plunge at the line and second play that looked just like it, followed, but out Of the line the ball shot to Dahlem who was streaking around the Hawkeye left wing Five Iowa tacklers stormed at him as he approached the goal and in one last desperate lunge he flung himself through space. His body Strengthened out In the air as Hawkeye vainly grabbed and when his head and the pigskin came down the latter was half way across the last white line. It was Michigan’s final touchdown Of fighting season in which the VOL verines came from the last line of defeat to a place among the respected. It was also the second touchdown made this year against Iowa without the benefit of breaks. In the first period Iowa had all the power with which the tall corn lads had been enshrouded by their previous exploits. The machine ripped the Michigan line to shreds and the powerful Glasgow gained almost as he pleased. He carried the ball eight times in that first relentless block and plunged through the Michigan forwards and with his 55-yard dash for the touch down included, gained 81 yards In eight plays. Gembis Kicks Field Goal Michigan had. other heroes than It’s minute halfback Capt Rich led the at tack on the Iowa line and wore himself out in defensive play. He had to leave the game before 1t came to an end. An other was Joe Gembis. whose place kick toppled Illinois from the undefeated class month ago and who played no favorites today by adding the points that defeated one of the Illini rivals for the leadership. While Iowa’s powerful backs were its major threat, the line at times more than held its own and used it’s weight to good advantage Moore, for his weight, was constant thorn to the Michigan runners. Some $4,000 spectators saw a mix up in the score. such as never before had been seen on a Michigan field. in the first half. After Glassgrow had kicked for the extra point following Iowa’s touchdown. Referee Nichols raised his arms to signal that it was successful Later an “official” announcement was made that the try was not good How ever, at the end Of the second period Nichols stated that Glassgow’s kick was successful and that Iowa was lead
