Noe Dame ibos Check c. g. pseb NayB7 Tie MICHIGAN RALLIES TO GET &C BREAK Gannon’S 77-Yard Run From Kickoff PaveS Way to MiddieS’ Score. ~ ALTIMORE; November l0.-TWo – big foot ball teams. Navy and n Michigan, did a deal of run l. ming and kicking before a crov a. of $4,000 in Venable Stadium here today, but at the finish Iee’5hA. held an advantage. With the flrla. whistle, the count stood 6–6 and the way the teams had battled it seemed neither would have won had the contest been continued indefinitely. II was just that kind of foot ball game. Navy was first to score. Its path to a touchdown was blazed by Joe Gan non when he received the kickoff opening the third quarter and ran from his 15-yard line to the foes 8-yard line before he was downed. During his IT. yard dash. the agile Cannon crossed from one side of the gridiron TO the other and twice reversed his field. Two slams into Michigar’s line followed and netted 4 yards. Then Cannon was given the ball and he crashed through to the touchdown. Cannon tried to kick the extra point, but he sent the ball wide of the posts. Late in the third quarter, Blondy Simrall caught Navy punt, ran the ball back 10 yards to midfield and there Michigan launched an attack that brought about the tie Three first downs were reeled off by the Wolverines, NOV ing the offensive to Nays 7-yard stripe and Stanley Hozer, chunky fullback, broke through the Mi6shipmen’s for ward wall for yards more just as the quarter ended Three plungeS by Hozer at the outset of the final quarter resuited in touchdown. Squier attempted 20 boot what would have proved the deri hIfF Moblocked the effort. Kicks From Field Fail. These were not the only scoring trials of the game. Navy twice tried for goals from the field. Late in the second quarter. the MidSnipmen carried the ball from the 40-yaro stripe to the 1Syard stripe in Michigan territory before they were halted by the Wolverines. Then Bower, a Navy substitute, was rushed into action and he endeavored to drop-kick a goal from the 25-yard line. The kick was low and the ball was stopped by Michigan man within 5 yards of the final line. Michigan, before its scoring drive, threatened to get somewhere in the third quarter, but lost the ball on downs at Nays 21-yard line. And right at the finish Navy made | a desperate bid for victory. The Mid shipmen drove so yards to Michigan’s 10-yard stripe. With only a minute to play Whitley” Lloyd tried to kick goal from placement on the 17-yard line, but the ball sailed under the croSs-bar and all threats were over for the day. Navy outrushed and outpassed Mich h. team in the line. The Midshipn1en checked in with 10 first downs. all but of them achieved by rushing. Two resulted from overhead play. Eight first downs were registered by the Wolverines, all by running attack. Navy went into the air eight times, completed three passes for a total gain OF 30 yards and had one pass int~rcepted. Michigan seven times resort to the forward pass, completed one =. lost yards in doing so. Game Better in Second Half. The only spectacular play of l.. game was Gannon’s 77-yard runbaC !. of the second half kickoff, yet after tedious first half the contest was 1alrly interesting. Throughout the opening quarter, both teams seemed SSAu NPOAA AAChIIlS IIlc CON6I OH Iuo ball. Both BowStrom of Navy and Slmrall Of Michigan time and time again sent the pigskin sailing over the field with the Wolverine getting a bit more distance into his kicks than did the Midshipman. The second quarter found Michigan generally on thu defensive, but in the last two periods it was nip-and-tuck affair. Early in the fray Navy had as the core OF its attack Joe Clifton. the Paducah plunger. and the Kentucky boy did his work we’ll Later Cannon became the spearhead of the onslaught, While. toward the end Lloyd figured prominently in Nays drive. All OF the Michigan backs contributed gen. erously to their teams offensive, but 1t was Simran and Hozer who did most OF the gaining. Simrall carried the ball when end dashes we’re in order and Hozer when yardage through the Navy line was attempted. For time Continued on Second Page)
