The Badgers expected a snap and played two substitutes at the outset, but after the visitors had taken a pleasant promenade down THE field and ON back of the Wisconsin goal they tumbed to themselves and called i’m Jacobs and Pyre. heavyWeightS who had been mere lookerS-om. Even then it took a mighty effort to keep their craft afiOat, though Capt. Richards made a Thousand or two spectators sick at heart, when, finally having a fair chance to win the game, kicked wide of the goal and pied all hopes. The game was one of the hardest fought ever seen ON the home grounds. The widest excitement prevailed throughout, being even greater than at the Minnesota game last fall. The team work of the Illinois eleven was much superior to that of the Wisconsin team, the Badgers being almost unable to break through their interference. The Wisconsin boys played we’ll individually, most of their big gains being made almost Unassisted; and their uphill fight and ma nipulatfOn of staying qualities were very gratifying. The contest was stubbornly contest ed throughout and was characterized by horribly rough playing. Branch, Illinois, left end, was ruled off for smuggling. Several others let their fists lose occasionally. Jacobs and Gregg of Wisconsin and HOtchkisS of Illnois were injured SO that they had to leave the game and most of the other players received minor Injuries, while blood flowed much more freely than at .1- 4.1N,t structor at the Univ ersity Of WiscOnsim last year, had charge of the IllinoiS eleven and the effect of his work is we’ll seen. AT the beginning of the game the Champaign boys took the BAN on the kickoff and without losing it once made a touchdown in a trif1e over three minutes They simply marched forward unin terruptedly till the goal was gained. In the second half Wisconsin braced up handsomely and played its old style game, making two tOuchdoWns, but after very long and hard fights. Baum and Sconce made most of the gains for Illinois, Baum breaking through Wisconsin’s line repeatedly for big gains. The visitors made most of their gains around the ends or be tween the tackles and ends, seldom trying center play. For the home team Karel, Richards, Gregg, Pyre , and Thompson did the best aggressfye work. Karel made several long runs around Illinois ends, and Rich ards heroically bUcked the center many times for gains. Trautman at | quarter played a strong game, es- ! pecially in defensive work.
