BREAKS” AID YALE TODEFEAT BROWN 0utrushed and 0utpassed, Smart and Powerful Ellis Win, 32–14. NEW HAVEN, Conn, october 20.-A smart, powerful Yale football team that knew how to make the breaks” of the game and turn them into touchdoWns served notice on the East today that another champion is in the making at old Eli. With every player of any ability at ell in there at one time or another, The Glue Bulldogs smothered sur nrisingly strong Brown eleven, 81 70 IA. And all this despite the inspired for ward passing of Lincoln Fogarty’ Browns crack back, the fierce charging and tackling of the Rhode Island line, and defense that at one time consisted of eleven substitutes. Although Brown rolled up Il first downs to Yale’s nine and completed seven out of 10 forward passes, while the Ellis could connect with but four IN eight tries, Yale never let an oppor~ tunity go to waste. Aside from “Hcot” Ellis brilliant dash of 88 yards for touchdown in the wild and woolly second quarter and the fifth score late in the game, every Brown break was capitalized. Garvey Seizes Chances. Johnny Carney, Ellis ace, scored twice in brief but potent personal appear ance in the first quarter. Each time he found an opportunity. he grabbed it with both fists, and few moments later, was edging himself across the Brown goal line. With the play hardly minutes old, Carney splashed Link Fogarty’S other wise brilliant day with Deep Blue by intercepting his pass and running 35 wards to Browns 22-yard line. One of Yale’s precious successful forwards. too few in number to be wasted anywhere, shot from Decker to Hoben and the ball was on Browns three-yard line. One more play and Carney was over The second splurge of the Bulldog ace was much the same. This time he grabbed a tumble when Fogarty was afflicted with slippery fingers few minutes later on Browns 42-yard stripe. A 22-yard dash, swinging madly through tackle, reversing back to the center of the field, brought Johnny to Browns 20-yard mark and in four plunges he was over. Yale thought that was enough for Carney for one day and he left the premises. It did Brown little good 10 put together Fogarty’s running and passing brilliance few moments later Fogarty shot one to Mansen. one of his backs, another to Capt. AL Cornsweet, the full back, raced around bit himself. and then served q 20-yard toss to ManSan for the score. Ellis Pulls Long Run. No sooner did Brown kickoff than Ellis, battling for Hoben’s regular lob tucked away the ball on his own 12-yard line and set out for more distant terri tory. He slid down the right side of the field, crossed to the center, and back down the left stripe all the while bat Ting down tacklers, slipped away from the Brown mems grasps to score from SO yards away. That was one Yale really earned Again in the second period. Brown slipped for moment and the Bulldogs were upon them. Loeser substitute Yale center, grabbed another of Fogarty’s passes and raced 20 yards to Browns 2-yard line. Wilson went right over, Yale counted again late in the fourth period when Lampe tossed two more of those valuable Eli passes, both good for 20 yards, and then counted himself from The 8-yard line. Brown got its last touchdown as Capt. Cornsweet blocked OrdWayS kick, recovered on the Eli 7-yard line. and battered his way over the goal in four tries. Browns seven passes gained 95 Yards, but three that were Intercepted we’re run back y yards bv the Yale crew. The Ellis piled up 46 yards by the air route. had none intercepted, end made everv yard gained count. Those figures alone told the story of the ball game.

YALE FIRST TEAM SAVED FOR CADETS Gets Jump on Brown and Leaves | Rest to Second Eleven New Haven, Oct. 22-Yale’s first team hammered it’s way to a 13–0 lead in 12 minutes of play at the Bowl Saturday and then retired to rest up for the Army game and leave the Eli seconds to finish the game with the score still all in lale’s favor at 32–14. It was a game marred by more fumbles than two teams of the caliber of Yale and Brown should have made. but it was enlivened and made thrilling by long runs on both sides and by the success of Browns aerial attack had against the Yale subs. The Blue regulars were at their best. Garvey chlrned his way to two touchdowns and took an early shower. Decker played an even shorter period than Garvey. but in that time he intercepted Brown forward pass and made a neat run that started Yale towards s second score. Hoben was another who played but a few minutes. Hubbard being the only starting back to re- main long in the game. This quar- tet of backs easily broke up Browns 8 (Continued on Following Page)
