YALE SCORES WIN ! IN Opening GAME But Falls to Show Much Stuff in Maine Victory New haven OCt- S.-1 atee IOOtball team failed to show much In either strength or weakness Saturday afternoon As 1t plodded mechanically to . $40 victory over Maine In its hrst game Of tho season. but it must be admitted that the hlance appeared to be on the side Of weak ness. The Pine Tree Staters prescented well-drilled eleven which gained almost as much ground A. the Blue and popped passes into Yale territory for such consistent gains that Yale was fortunate to escape being scored upon. Yale had enough punch to push over four touchdowns. but whether this same attack can turn back the stronger opponents of the later season is problematical. Still. 1t was not 4 discreditable showing for an OPEN ing game. Estimates Of strength are made quite impossible by the fact that Yale’s first eleven played for only the first quarter. during which time 1t rolled up ~ points In workman like but uninspiring manner. The Eli line appeared quite effective in this period, opening good holes for Garvey and Hoben and stemming Names attempts to gain on straight football. After the regulars retired the showing was poorer, the substitute linemen finding the green Down casters almost their equals Despite advance predictions to the contrary, Coach Stevens continued Tad” Jones’ system of one-man ball carrying. Garvey bearing the brunt of the attack In the first quarter and showing the same brilliancy he first displayed late last fall. Hoben also took the ball for good gains on sew eral occasions but retired early with pulled tendon which 10 expected to keep him out OF the Georgia game. Lampe replaced Carney and made yardage consistently. while Loud made the most spectacular play of the day when he broke through of tackle in the third period and lodged and raced his way for so ; yards and a score. Yale exposed a glaring weakness In defense against forward passes, Maine completing fully half of a large number OF aerial heaves and carrying the ball within threatening distance on several occasions, Luck lily for Yale. it was at these times that passes were missed or penalties inflicted on the invaders, 50 Maine never got inside the ten-yard line. Coach Stevens will have to develop better aerial defense II he expects to stop Hawley’s passing Dartmouth eleven. Yale could not use the pass itself very well Saturday, it, endings proving no SCOTS nor Fishwicks In this or any other department. One end. McCiven. continually roughed the Maine kicker and was finally penalized for 1t. In short. Yale gave no signs of real power such AZ that possessed by last years team-but 1t was 4 first game and no over much could be expected. At least, Yale did not tumble once, and this evidence Of careful drilling in handling the ball is almost unique for 4 season. opener. One Yale man-name and number unknown-made the prize bull OF the afternoon when he forgot he was playing In 1928 and not 1897. Last year a lateral pass was dead where grounded. but this year It IL still In play. Maine tried one and missed connections by yards, ana Yale player carelessly stopped the ball’a progress and walked away. 1t wa not until the referee gave the ball te Yale At that point that the unthinking youth realised what q chance he had overlooked

YALE PITT FACING TESTING BATTLES Teams Held Best in East in 1927 Face Georgia and West Virginia. . NEW YORK, october 10.-Pittsburgh and Yale. generally rated at the top of the Eastern foot ball heap last year. will have difficulties in the chase for national honors next Saturday Each team was beaten once last season. although Pitt waited until after the regular season had closed to lose by a single point to Stanford on the Pacific Coast. Yale, on the other hand, met defeat early in the campaign at the hands of rugged, powerful brilliant Georgia eleven, 14–10. Georgia comes North to do battle with the Ellis again this Saturday, and Pitt, hardly up to its standard of last year when need all its resources, it would seem, to take care of West Virginia Nal Stevens has the material for a great team at New Haven, but the question just now is whether it has been developed to the point where a foe as sturdy as Georgia cannot only be met but defeated The Southerners demonstrated great scoring power in their overwhelming defeat of Mercer last Saturday, while Yale’s 27–0 VIC tory over Maine was not to impress Sive. But there’s this to consider: Yale knows what to expect this year. The Bulldogs have been caught once, and if they’re caught again, it will not be because they did not have chance to get set. Pitt and West Virginia battles are classics in western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia These two, with Washington and Jefferson and Carnegie Tech, form the Big Four” of that foot ball section. The Panthers, after a mediocre start against Thiel, snapped into it against Bethany and rolled up So points. West Virginia bowed to its first foe, that mighty atom” Davis and Elkins, TO, but swept aside West Virginia Wesleyan, 1910, and the Haskell Indians, 28–7. Keefer, West Virginia’s big fullback, is the man Pitt must watch. He’s scored five touchdowns SO far, and the season is young. New York Has Big Game. New York offers it’s own struggle between unbeaten Fordham and equally unbeaten New York University for a place in the list of closely matched, hard-fought games. Yale’s traditional rivals also meet Southern opposition, Princeton taking on Virginia, while Harvard is doing its best to entertain North Carolina. The battles between Colgate and Virginia Poly, Cornell and Hampden-Sidney and Dayton Brown complete the intersectional schedule in the East for Saturday. Boston College steals march on the field by meeting Duke at Boston Friday, Columbus day. Her lineup shifted about, Navy travels to Chicago to meet Notre Dame. Most of the other major elevens will tackle minor opposition, designed to put them on edge for the bigger tests to come. Nays varsity foot ball team may recover from its first two defeats, but it will never look the same. Only three of Bill Migrants original first string line hold their places. and the backfield has been shifted just as drasticaIly. It’s a good thing for Syracuse the Nebraska game is not to be played until a week from Saturday The fresh men. using Nebraska formations, scored thrice on the varsity yesterday. There’s couple of Ticknors on Harwards varsity now Bill Ticknor has been promoted to first-string guard position and played beside his younger brother, Ben, first-string center. Jess Hawley’S devised a new scheme to keep his Dartmouth backs behind the proper interference. His varsity appeAred with white circles painted on the seats of their pants. and the guards with black ones on theirs. 1t helps the ball CARRIES to find their interference going through the line.
