BY the Associated Press. N YEW YORK, october 1.-Now Is the time for all good foot ball coaches to iron out some Of the / kinks, made painfully apparent, in the gridiron’s first general skirmish of the season on Saturday. With one notable exception, the Easts major elevens successfully cleared their first hurdle, although some Of them had little or nothing to spare. 7 he excepton was the Naval Academy, pre-Season nominees for possible national honors. The Midshipmen stubbed their col Iective toe on Davis-Elkins and the West Virginiaus won by safety, Q to 0. Thus second giant fell before the well trained Scarlet hurricane, coached by Crafty Cam” Henderson. Davis Elkins beat West Virginia University, z to 0, two weeks ago. Next Saturday the Navy takes on an other foe, which may prove to be just as tough-Boston College. The outstanding feature on next Saturday’s card, however, will be “Biff” Jones crack Army array facing South ern Methodist University. The Methodists bowled over Howard Payne Col lege, 80 to O., on Saturday, while the Army was romping to 35 to 0 triumph over Boston University. The Haskell Indians, inveterate train riders, come from Lawrence, Kans., to clash with West Virginia’s Mountain GERS, and Syracuse, hard put to down Hobart, plays host to William and Mary in the other outstanding intersection game on the Atlantic Seaboard.
