to cross the Cadet goal line in five thrusts from the three yard mark. This was the most heroic defense stand of the game. Twice Clifton ploughed into the mased forwards barely making yard each time Lloyd took turn at tackle with only foot to show for his plunge Then Clifton made the final thrust, only to be piled up in the swirling mass with the goal inches away. The game, brilliant but not as spectacular a pageant as it was a year ago in Chicago, was witnessed by the largest crowd it has ever attracted in the east, as great an assemblage as ever saw. football battle in New York. Secretaries Will bur and Davis, Mayor Jimmy Walker, high officers of both branches of the service mingled with thousands of fans, forming backgrounds that I had their most colorful features in the grey-coaed corps of cadets and the blue-coated brigade of midshipmen. Cheers roared and echoed from one side of the field to the other as the rival admirals and generals of the future We’d for vocal hon6rs. ARGUMENT OVER GRID DECISION Southern California Claims Score Should Have Been 8 to ‘ Chicago. Nov. 50 tPl-Ths touch back play of the Notre Dame Southern California. football game last Saturday has added another controversial chapter to the colorful history of Soldier Field stadium, scene of record breaking crowds and the Hong count” given Champion Gene Tunney. The Southern Californians. when they landed home yesterday. were quoted as saying that the play should have been called a safety, which would have given them ah S-7 victory over Notre Dame. In stead the touchback decision of un- pire John Schommer. former Uni versity of Chicago star. sent them westward with a 7–6 defeat. The little Notre Dame quarterback Riley, intercepted a Trojan pass near his goal line, but was tackled and lost the ball, which was recovered back of the Notre Dame goal line by three Troians. Schommer called IL touchback on the ground that Riley had not gained control of the ball before hard tackle made him tumble. Major John l.. Griffith, western conference athletic Comnlssloner, several Big Ten football officials and other sports authorities agreed with Schommer’s decision, but there were also those who maintained that Riley held the ball in his hands long enough to say he had control of 1t. All agreed he had not drawn it tight In his arms before 1t flew out of his grasp as the tacklers hlt him. Schommer’s statement on the play. after the game, was: T was within a few yards of Riley when he intercepted the Southern California pass. l never was more on top of a play in my life. l saw him grab the ball, juggle it, and lose it when tackled. “The rules say that befoer ball may be considered to be fun bled, the player must have had possession and control. l couldn’t rule that he fum bled. A touchback was the only interpretation that I could make” Schommer said that Field Judge Jack “Pinkey” Griffith. Pacific coast conference official, agreed with him on the ruling.
