And as in the past two seasons yesterdays battle was hard fought all the way While Washington and Lee played “heads-up” foot ball and deserved to win the contest as it was staged the mental and mechanical mistakes of the Old Liners. mainly the former. were factors that turned the tide the way of the LcXingtonians. Washington and Lee scored In the second and last periods. leading to o at the half, while Maryland got it’s core in the third period on sensaional 55-yard dash by Roberts after he had received a punt His failure to k.ck goal prevented the game from | beng deadlOCked at the time. Generals Get Help. 1t was combination of mental and mechanical slips. the latter. of course, being one of the breaks of the game, that gave Washington and Lee its first score. Maryland had the ball in it’s | possession on its own 17-yard line. talrd down and yards to so. Here. | Tcnney. Maryland reserve quarter | back. playing in the place of the in. lured regular. Washington and Lee got inside the o-Nard stripe. but Maryland held. but was not equal to the task a second time. after it had punted out and the Generals. making good a couple of passes with SPOTS on the receiving end got into scoring position and drove across the line despite a game stand by the Old Liners. White made me score Lott added the extra point with drop-kick. Maryland held the upper hand for the remainder of the half. and once was inside Washington and Lees 90. Sard mark, where apparent poor iudc. ! ment on plays killed all chances to | count. Roberts Thrills Crowd. Maryland got back into the running IN the third quarter when Roberts p’llied his thrilling feat. The teams nad been going along on even terms Tor about 10 minutes exchanging punts frequently. when Roberts GOT his chance. He pulled the ball out of the air on his own 45-yard line. and, / helped by almost perfect interference, made his dash across the goal He | also tried to drop-kick for the extra | point, but. winded by his long run, made feeble boot, the ball falling / short. | From then on until about midway of the final quarter the teams battled on pretty even terms. Then the Old | Liners got a grand opening, when. after tossing the Washington and Lee ball carriers for losses on two plays, | Spots got off a rather ordinary punt | This gave Maryland the ball close to , the Generals 35-yard line. Gains were made on a couple of running plays. and then kessler and Snyder, who had | been rushed into the game. attempted ! TO count with pass, the former | hcaving the ball. Snyder was stand ! ing on the goal about to snare the | ball when Lott, of the Generals, got | in front of him and intercepted it. From here the scene shifted sudden ! ~ to Washington and Lees second | touchdown. Lott got around the | Maryland right end for about 80 yards, / thrown for losses and forced to punt kessler let the ball slip through his / hands and Dorsey, Washington and / Lee winGman. pounced upon it. With ! White GOing most of the rushing. the | Generals soon crossed the line. White again carried the ball on the final play. ! Lott this time missed the drop-kick | try for the extra point. Pass Goes Wrong. | Maryland took the next kick oft, and with only couple minutes to go, tried passing game in desperate effort to count. This almost gave | Washington and Lee another touch down. as Howe of the Generals inter- ! cepted heave and almost got loose , As the game ended. the Generals had the ball on Maryland’s 15-yard mark. ! Thomas. Maryland’s hackfield ace was injured early in the second half | and was forced out of the game. There was plenty of pep and color to the game. each school having it’s band, the cheering being well above the average and the struggle being so close as to maintain interest to the |. final whistle. remarkable feature of the contest was that there was not Il single pen atty. except one or two for the use / If the forward pass twice in the same lown.
