Princeton scored thrilling victory over Cornell today 81 to 10, in the first foot bali game between these ancient rivals in 20 years. A record-breaking Cornell crowd of So, 900 saw the Ithacans outplayed and outrushed and decisively defeated in a see-saw struggle after they had passed and kicked their way into the lead twice during the first half. The Tigers packing the greater punch and exhibiting a more alert defense, took the lead near the close of the second period and held it to the end. Wittmer Bright Star. Cornell provided the most spectac. ular setting of it’s gridiron history for the renewal of relations with Old Mas. sau, but curley haired, stocky young Tiger Ed Wittmer of Pittsburgh fur. nished the fireworks on the playing field. Wittmer, a flash around the ends, battering-ram through the line and a ball-hawk on the defense, scored only one of Princeton’s three touchdowns, but his line plunging, passing and re. ceiving contributed largely to the ad. vauces which enabled Mike Miles and Phil Strubing to tally the others. Earl Baruch. skillful kicker and passer. gave Wittmer excellent support, but it was the latter who bore the brunt of the Tiger attack from the start to finish. Wittmer not only gained consist. emily through the big red line, but his alertness on defense kept the Ithacans from completing their best advance of the game with a touchdown in the third period and again taking the lead. Tigers Hold Ithacans. At this stage, Princeton was cling ing tenaciously to slim four-point lead, 1910, as the red-shirted warriors. swept some so yards down the field. mixing passes and off-tackle thrusts nicely in a drive that reached the Tiger three-yard lire. Cornell had three chances to make that small dislance, but centerbuck failed, then the rowing Wittmer batted down two successive passes over the line by Balderston to turn back the Ithacans and give Princeton the battle on downs. This was the climax of Cornelrs Of. fensive efforts, which in the first half had produced a touchdown, on two passes, and a field goal from the 16yard line by John Anderson. stalwart tackle. Throughout most of the last two periods. Princeton carried the fight into Cornell territory, settling the issue, with a spectacular 75-yard advance to score in the fourth period. Except for a 15-yard pass by Baruch to Moeser,y most of this distance was gained by Wittmer. but Miles plunged the four yards that put the ball behind Cornell’s goal line for third touchdown.
