STEER ELEVEN COMES BACK To WIN Texas Outplays Baylor and Scores 1873 Triumph in Mud. Continued From Page /. Part g. the tackle, righted himself. scooped vi the ball and trotted across the line. After Kings brilliant drive in the latter part of the third failed. Texas took up the task of coming again from midfield. With the ball deep in Bay. lor territory King passed to Saxon The Texas half dashed for the goal but was stopped at the three-yard line by Jones. Again the ball slipped away. rolling toward the goal. This time it was Newell who recovered and stepped across the line. GREAT CENTERS BATTLE. The battle OF Pfannkuche and Walker, regarded as leading aspirants for all-conference center, was watched closely throughout. Pfannkuehe play cd brilliantly, but Walkers work on defense perhaps gave him a slight edge. Yet Walker was the only Bear beside Jones who was backing up the line effectively, while Pfannkuche had fewer chances to get the runner, as the Texas line always stopped him in his tracks. Bridges usual set of trick plays was in evidence. but. contrary to their effect in 1923 and 1924. they had little luck. The slow field deprived them of half the element of and only once was a Bay Tor back able to reel off q substantial gain. Early in the game the Bears hunted the breaks by punting as soon as they got the ball and throughout the game they were more likely to kick than run. Yet the expected tumble materalized but twice and each time the Longhorn safety man recovered. At that, the Bears were clearly out-kicking the LongAorns, who averaged five yards less per punt than did Baylor. STALLTER Is STAR. Stallter, shifted to the post of safety man, performed astoundingly. Like King. he cclipsed the mighty Saxon on the days work. His peculiar side step was not ruined by the muddy field, and his tackhng, never before spectacular, became a feature IF the game Fred Thompson, sub in the second half. took over the burden of carrying the ball released by King. Like King he plowed the line without difficulty, and as the game ended Texas was threatening a third touchdown as the result OF his long gains. The Baylor line, giving up yardage NJ frequent intervals. was the Long horn life-saver. Aside from Walker, any man in the line was likely 10 be brushed out Of every play. Coates in particular appeared far below form. Of the backs, aside from Jones, Kelley was the most reliable, yet none of the Bear ball-carriers was ‘verly Guccessful on offense. The line up: Texas.
