maine COLLEGES SPILLED DOPE ALL over LANDS CAPE; b0WD0|N’S FIGHTING SP IR|T BEATS TUFTS Brown 27-Bates IL Providence, r. l., Nov. 11-Unable to score through the impregnable Brown line, the Bates College eleven in its battle here today with the Brunonians switched to the use of the forward pass and thereby threw scare into the Providence collegian’s ranks. The score was Brown “a, Bates IL. The Maine collegians made their brilliant bid to overcome threc-touchdown lead in tie second half after being completely ouplayed in the opening quarters. Not only did the Bates warriors cross the Brown goal line for two tcuchdowns on we’ll executed forward passes. Kempton to Davis. but they also caused the Brown coaches to send back into the fairy four or five of the first string men they had pulled out after registering a 81 point lead. 1t was evident after the first few minutes Of play in the last half that Brown would need her best men, and Coach Staff began rushing them in. But before Brown had rcgained her full strength Bates had registered its two ITALICS. One came bc’ore all the Brown regulars were in, but the Sec ond was made with an almost COM plete Brown varsity lineup. Bates success evidently was a thorn in the side Of the Brunonians and served to goad them on to great er efforts, for shortly after the last Bates touchdown, the Brown eleven displayed its most powerful attacks OF the game. Starting from their own 30-yard line the Bears marched steadily through the Bates line to within five yards of the goal and then went over for their fourth and last touchdown, on forward pass, Sweet to Carter Bates also made a similar march in its drive for it’s first touchdown i’ll the third quarter, only gaining ground on forward passes, instead Of line bucks, or runs around end. Bates Loses TO Brown, But Throws Its Scare PROVIDENCE, R. L., Nov. 11.-Batcs proved TO be an Unexpectedly tough proposition for Brown this afternoon, and, although Brown won, 27 to II, the Maine coilegians gave them hard bat tie and in the second half outplayed the Bears completely except in the last few minutes, when the full strength of Browns varsity was rushed on to the field to check an offensive that had scored two touchdowns and threatened third. Brown had things all its own way in the first half, Bates never showing a bit Of driving power and only once get ting as far as Browns 40-yard line. Its defense was stubborn, however, and Brown, although totalling q points, was forced to keep playing. In the opening period the Bruins rolled up Il points, scoring two touchdowns through continued attacks upon the Bates line and in the second put over another. At the opening OF the second half Bates gave up its attempts to get through the Brown forwards and resorted to the overhead game, IN which II succeeded in completely battling the Brown players. mr..
