COAST TEAMS FEAR idaho HENCEFORTH OREGON VICTORY ADDS NEW LAURELS TO SCRAPPY VANDALS OF 1922. Watch Idaho from now on! Idaho is not only Jared by her OF ponents the balance Of this season but the Vandals are to be reckone with as most dangerous by ever Pacific coast eleven from here on ou for years to come. Coach Mathew has placed Idaho football in it’s pre- sent high standing-side by side wit the footbll leaders of the country and the Oregon game at Portland Sat urday afternoon simply added ney laurels to the Vandals of 1922 and thu coach himself Wet and Slow Field. There are no alibis to offer. Te the Vandals of 1922 it simply ism done. Oregon won in the second period when Chapman, brilliant Ore gon quarterback, booted the ball through the standards with a place kick from the 25 yard line. Play was on wet. sloppy, sodden, slow and heavy field and Oregon outweighed Idaho ten pounds to the man. The more advantageous on account of the extra weight, made many times over slow field, won for the Oregon men. There are no alibis to offer but, in all honesty, Idaho would have won from Oregon on a dry field The vic tory for the Oregonians came as the thirteenth win in Is years Of athletic rivalry. The Idaho men were not bothered by the PHYSIOLOGY of past defeats and no Idaho team, coached by Mathews, will be worried about the past record of Oregon or any other team. Weather FavOrS OREGON. The writer, however, while not be- 1ieving in an “Oregon Jinx,” is in clined to believe in Weaher Jinx !” for certain it is that the weather fav ored Oregon. The Vandals now have almost two weeks in which to prepare for the Uni versity Of Utah Boise on Armistice Day. From Boise they will go to Pasadena to meet the University Of Southern California. The rest before the Utah game is we’ll worth while. Idaho has been handicapped by the most impossible schedule ever thrust upon team, and under Mathews such a condition cannot repeat itself. Figures on Gains Made. From figures compiled on a play by play running story of he game sent from Multnomah field to the university gymnasium it is shown that Oregon made 100 yards by actual scrimmage as compared to 118 yards for Idaho. Oregon, however, made only rs yards on forward passes, while the Vandals gained 128 yards through their over head attack. The cold figures show that Oregon gained 215 yards from scrimmage and forward passes while Idaho gaind 246 yards from scrimmage and forward passes. Captain Babe” Brown outpunted Chapman Of Oregon Brown on II punts averaged slightly over 40 yards while Chapman on 10 punts averaged an even 38 yards. One Of Browns punts was for a scant Is yards which | cut down the average while Chapman on the last punt of the game got credit for a SO yard kick due to a | lucky roll. Browns punting was truly remarkable when it is to be / remembered that he was kicking a heavy, almost water-soaked ball. Idaho Scares WebfoOters. Idaho threw scare into Oregon at the start. “Skippy :” Stivers on the first play clipped off 40 yards around end. Two line bucks and pass, Brown to Breshears, netted 20 more yards. The ball was On Oregon’s % yard when an Idaho tumble was recovered by Oregon and he play went down the field. After IN exchange Of punts in which Ore !. yon gained on one exchange on account of Browns only bad kick the Webfooters had the ball on te Idaho Is yard line. An Oregon pass netted 3 yards and straight football carried he ball the rest of the way. On her ,wn Is yard line the Idaho mn held Ind Chapman was forced to place tick from the 20 yard line. Chap ! nan failed just one play before the md of the quarter. In the second quarter Oregon’s eleven invaded Idaho territory but we’re stopped on the 20 yard line. Chapman dropped back to the 25 yard inc and made good on his place-kick. After an exchange of punts in which daho gained ground the Vandals tarted a determined offensive from hir 30 yard line. Straight football nd a forward pass of 20 yards, Brown to Vesser, put the Vandals well within Oregon’s end of the field. An ‘ daho pass was caught by Johnson f Oregon on his own 20 yard line, J nd the first half ended with Oregon n charge of the ball on her own yard line. ;. Brown VS.. Chapman. The third quarter was little more + han a kicking duel between Brown nd Chapman with the Idaho men s aving the edge. Play was in the : enter Of the field most of the neriod. he Vandals in this period outtought ne Oregon team and we’re carrying le ball from mid-field as the period nded \ The fourth quarter is long to be emembered in Portland for, it was : hown by the Vandals that team an come from behind in the face OF | Il odds and Outright their opponents. i his is what Idaho did.
