Navy Eleven Is The Victor Over Georgia Tech Midshipnen Show Well Oiled Machine With Fire Attacking Versatility Annapolis football mariners did here this afternoon Threatening weather, which blew up from the South in the form of Georgia Techs great eleven, did it’s mightiest on Navy field, but when static conditions had been restored the ridshipnaen were in COM plete control of the situation with margin Of 10 to 0 marking their superiority over the visitors. That margin fairly presents the Diff ference between the two eievens az they bsttled away before crowd that taxed the seating capacity of the field. An autumn sun beamed down TO take something off the keenness Of the Detober breezes. & Briefly considered, 7aore compact defense and somewhat better knitted offense carried the day for the naval eleven. This game had been written in the program as an engagement to be taken by 40 mans lightly, and Fol wells team was keeniy keyed to the situation. With Captain Conroy, Ne Kee, Cullen, Barehet and Taylor. the Navy’s right end, doing the work as advancing the bali bahind good inter ference, and aided and sbetted by a powerful and alert line. the midshipmen mustered an attack that was not to be denied. There were no brilliant. hafr-raising runs, where the runncr eluded series OF tackiers, to feature che contest, But on the other hand, the contest afforded the privilege o. watching well-oiied, smooth-workine machine going about It’s task. A wider versatility in attack and q cleaner record at handling the ball on passes were important fact,-s in the Navy’s victory. More than once when the yellow jacketed lads from Dixie rallied ard checked what looked like a successful march by the middies, the resourcefui Mr. Conroy, who directed the attack Of the inidshipmen, slipped another and q new card firm somewhere in the midst, OF the pack and outwitted the stubborn and courageous stand the visitors were making. Conrcy Fakes Attack The first touchdown for the visitors came about after thrilling turn Of strategy Of this nature. Having worked the ball well down into Techs territory in the first suarter, the future admirals suddenly found themselves confronting what looked like an ire sistible barrier about Techs 1o-yard line. There WIS 9 hurried coasul.aton, kind of ring-around rosie OF close communion of the midshipmen. They resumed their place and the bail was passed. Conroy faxed an attack on Techs left tackle, but it was hoax, He wheeled suddenly and, with Lentz,. the big right guard, dropping back to head his interference, sped around his own left to Techs 2-yaroi line. On the next play Barchet drove through for the first touchdown. That was but sample of the way the Navy pilot mixed his drive ard bit In another location with a different type of weapon. Now pass, now the old end-oyer-end trick, with Taylor, the Academy strong man, packing che ball, where Lentz ard Carney were dropping back from their line positions In tims to head his interference, and now = straight thrust through the opposing tackles. It need not be inferred, however, thst the midshipmen were not meeting q stubborn defense. Claire Frye, the Tech passer, who played rowing center on defense, and “Pinkie” Hunt were the bulwark of the Tech second line, and they did yeoman serviee. Mean time, on the tanks, Mitchell and John Station hurled themselves time and time again into the breach that cut drives by the Navy’s speedy backs Failure to smother the mIdshipmen’s passes probably contributed more than else to the discontinue Of the In his general scheme Of things Conroy felt little hesitation ct trying the aerial attack, and in large number of cases they proved effective, Barchet and Conroy alternated at flip. ping the ball, and beth threw with TN erFing precision. At the other cad Parr Taylor and conroy, when his mate, was passing, were very adept at snaxging the ball. Travel Straight to Target Almost iavar ria5ly these PASSES were quick, sharp tosses that travelled straight to the target and the Georgians found il too much of task 10 cover them. Once or twice long, iof.ing tosses were tried and two OF these we’re successful, Taylor taking the bali on both occasions. On still another he sprinted twenty yards or more across the Georgians’ goal line to receive the ball with clear field. but it was too easy apparently. He dropped the ball with another touchdown in his grasp, though there was no one present to worry him. On only one occasion did the Geosgians gather the inspiration for real thrill. That came in the first quarter shortly after the Navy had registered its first touchdown. After receiving the kiek-off tae Georgians, deep in their own tesr tory, opened their drive. Me- Donoagh hurled a long pass to Hunt and the Tech fuilbsck covered forty Yards before he was finally hauled down. II was one OF the feature plays of the day. Barron followed with a sprint around the Nays left flank for four teen yards, but tho middics brsced shersly thereafter and checked the drive. @ The Navy’s second touchdown wss the The result OF q well executed pass that TAYLOR took from Conroy and COW cred total Of thirty-fve yards before he crossed the goal line. After several exchanges of kicks Cullen finally kicked over the Tech line. Taylor broke through and nehbed Barron for q seven-yard loss, but he took twelve yards across the Navy’s left tackle on the next play, but Tech was forced TO kick. Brewster, who had replaced Mc!Vhorter for Tech. made 4 short kick and Baschet ran the ball 10 Tech’a 3a-yard line. Barchet wss snagged for q seven-yayd loss on this first play. Then Ccnroy shot the win ming pass to Taylor, who lodged cvsr for the touchdown. The lineup: Pos Navy sls). Georgia Tech fs,. . T..... Boilcs 4. &. :. s. Gonnsi 1. q ~. Carney afcIntyr~

Good generalship wo ,i ray, brought a kick, but Tech s ...,d a. a loss against the powerf.. Nav charge. Conroy gained a couple of yards at right end, then hurled forward pass thirty yards into the out stretched arms of Taylor, who stepped over the line for a touch. down. Bachet failed to negotiate that placement kick and the score remained 13 TO 0 for the remainder Of the game. “- Navy Loses Touchdown. The Middies deserved a third touchdown. The opportunity came early in the fourth period. Mckee, fleet-footed MILDLY, had intercepted a forward pass and galloped down the left side of the field for thirty five yards before Reds Baroon, springing up from nowhere in par ticuiar. hurled him to the parched grass on Techs 25-yard line. Quickly the Navy attack got busy off the tackles and, with short forward pass to Mckee, the ball | was nine yards closer to the South erners goal. Then came a double pass from Conroy to Mckee. The high over the struggling line to Taylor. This time the Navy end, with a touchdown for the reward Of catching that whirlwind ball, allowed 1t to slip through his fin. gers for a touchdown. The Navy cohorts groaned. e Aside from the great individual performances of Reds Barron, the Navy looked better than Tech in all but punting. Pup” Mcwhor. ter’s punts were high and long, with Brewsters almost as good. Both Tech kickers got the ball away much faster than either Con. roy or, Cullen, who did the Navy punting. Once the Navy kicker took so much time that his attempt was blocked. q II was a great day for football. The sun was bright and warming to those grouped around the field. There was a nip in the air that made hin pockets valuable. Many hip pockets were working, too, it might be added. There was no breeze to favor either team. Navy Kicks OFF First. Navy won the toss and kicked off to Tech, which defended the south goal. Three attempts to fool the Middies with the forwards shifting and McWhorter lifted a high punt to Navy’s 35-yard line. Barchet and Conroy made 1t first down on two ! charges against the tackles. Finding the going rough, Cullen punted out side on Techs 15.yard line. Tech once more failed to gain consecutively and this time there came a wretched punt, the ball going out : isde at Techs 26.yard line, from which the Middies put 1t In play. Again came short plunges off tackle by Barchet and Conroy and short forward pass failed. So Gull len worked a double pass to Taylor, who scooted around left end for twenty yards to Techs 7.yard line. In three plays Barchet Jumped across the Tech lire for touchdown His goal from placement made the score Z to o. Navy’s kickoff was a touchback and Tech began at it’s own 20-yard line. Barron was tossed for loss ot five yards when he sought to get around the end and. after McDonough got couple Of yards, Tech punted outside at Navy’s 45.yard line. Fail. ing to gain. Navy punted once more over the Tech goal line for touch. back. Tech Works n Pass. On the very first play after lining up on the 20.yard line Tech worked beautiful forward pass, Barron to McWhorter. for q gain Of twenty yards. The Tech cheering section went mad and called for touchdown. Barron raced around right end for twelve yards and another first down. The Tech backfield seemed moving fast behind the hiking forwards and four plays brought another first down and the ball to Nayy’s 20-yard line. Coming close to the goal posts, the Navy line became OF granite and. after two small gains, Stolz broke through and tossed Barron for a loss
