Maroon A m ong Leading Title Contenders After 28.7 Win OUer Buckneu; Gebhardt Stars PRINCETON IMPRESSES MYTH each passing Saturday, Jock w Sutherland’s record as Lafayette coach becomes brighter and bit nearer the brilliancy Of Glenn warmers feats at Pittsburgh. And with each week end the Maroon impresses moro firmly upon football fans its right to a high position among the contenders for the 1922 COL legiate championship. Lafayette crushed Bucknell on Saturday, 26–7, for its sixteenth consecutive victory. The string Of successive wins began after q day in late October, 1920, when the Panthers last scored triumph over the Maroon. Dopesters anticipated q close game at Easton,. but Lafayette ran through the Bucknell team like an April shower through a bargain counter raincoat. Pete Reynolds has a veteran squad and a record Of 100 points scored in four games. The week previous the Navy was fortunate to win out in the last period over the Lewis5urg collegians. Bots Brunner, the Bobby Roth Of football. Is unquestionably one of the best backs in the game. Bots, who has played with almost as many college elevens as Roth has with different major league clubs, scored three touchdowns against Bucknell. Gebhardt and Ga really responsible for Lafayette’s strength. From tackle to tackle, the Maroon has an impregnable defense and woe to the backs who attempted to gain around the ends qua rded by Berry and O’Connell. HEBHARDT has turned out to BE- ~ as good line -plunger as Doc Elliott, out here again the Hnemen play an important port. Gebhardt has crushing po,cer in his drive, but the f0r”ord’ max. tn: holes. Big Three Shine VALE, Harvard and Princeton all L scored impressive victories. The Crimson gained revenge on the Praying Colonies from Centre College, getting 24’0 decision. Yale had no trouble with Williams, running up $50 walkover. and Princeton had to use only straight football for three Of it’s four touchdowns against Maryland, winning 28-O. When it is considered that Penn had to give everything to cross Maryland’s goal twice, the power Of tho Tiger offense looks doubly strong. Next Saturday Roper’s athletes bat tie Chicago at Chicago, and they are In shape for the struggle, for every one came out OF the Maryland game in good condition. Stagg also has the Windy City players ready. He did not have to use his regulars to beat Purdue, 12-O. Saturdays games ran according to form with few exceptions. One was the unexpected fight of Swarthmore against Penn. and another was the 6–3 victory Of Vermont over Dartmouth. YER mont’s half dozen points came on field goals by Driscoll and Gooch. 4 SAFETY prevented q defeat Of n Iora, conqusrors Of Yale. BY Illinois. Ro.card Jones elsven ,con after hard-toa9ht game. 81. Navy Stops Tornado THE whirlwind attack Of the Golden L Tornado was stopped BY the Navy, 1870, and this win over Georgia Tech is not CHEEKY news to Pennsylvania men, whose gridiron representatives must face the Middies next Saturday ut Franklin Field. The Folwell fighters outplayed the Southerners in every period. although they failed to score In the last half after putting over touchdown in each of the first two periods. The brilliant work Of TAYLOR. whose gains were mainly responsible for the two touch downs. and the open field running Of Varchett and Conroy were features. Pitt got back into the winning class after two consecutive defeats, when Tiny Hewitt. sub halfback. intercepted forward pass and ran 70 yards for a touchdown in the final quarter. This sensational dash enabled the Panthers to. defeat Syracuse, 21–14. It was the first reverse the Orange has suffered this year, although Brown held the New York Staters to a scoreless tie. The Providence eleven continued its success by humping OF Lehigh, 6–2. Both Cornell and W. and J. knew they had been in titanic battles before they would take triumphs by the same
