CENTRE ELEVEN TOO FAST FOR ARIZONA Roberts, McMillin and COvington STAY in Victory by 80 to 0. GAME is PLAYED IN RAIN Downpour Holds Attendance Below 3,000-Game Is In sured for S25, 900. GAME Is PLAYED IN RAIN SAN DIEGO. Cal, Dec. 2G.--Smashing through the line and scooting around the flanks. L:lling the bali with accuracy and catching it with equal precision, combining power and speed with iesourcefulness and dazzling brilliancy, the Centre College football team this afternoon proved altogether too much for the University OF Arizona eleven in the San Diego Stadium. The Praying Colonels from Danville, KY, marched to glory through the rain which marred the event and the slippery slime underfoot. and won by SO to o. What Centre might have done to the lighter and outclassed Wildcats on fast field may be only coDjectured. Centre proved too strong for Arizona In every department and in every feature of football. The kentuckians had by Tar the more brilliant individuals and by far the more potent ensemble The great Bo McMillin scurried hither and sthither and delighted expert and tyro alike with the spectacular manner Of his progress toward the Wildcats goal line. Red Roberts was another brilliant star. I. Snoddy, Tanner and then youngster by the name OF Covington, who also distinguished himself late in the Centre triumph over Harvard, gave football followers here an exhibition such as San Diego never had seen. Covington ran fifty yards for n touchdown after CATCH ing punt. and scored again soon after ward. Centre had the advantage in the weights. The Colonels averaged 1873 pounds on the line with an average Of IN IN n IL 11x7 averages We’re 176 and 15S. Centre tackled with far more expertness and its end play was so far beyond that of the Wildcats that there was no comparison. Start With a Rush. y The Colonels put over a couple Of stouchdowns in the first quarter and sent over third in the second period. which ended with the score 1s to 0. In the third session there was another touchdown, while in the closing period the Centre scooters scurried over the line twice. making six touchdowns In all. with four goals missed. The rain made II difficult 10 boot the ball over the bar. Arizona had chance to score in the third period when. with grit and game ness, the Wildcats worked the ball within striking distance Of the Centre goal line. As q last resort ARIZONA called on the forward pass and Centre was all set for the move It diagnosed the play to a niceity. Intercepted the pass. and then began TO work the ball back. 1t worked It until It sent over a touchdown. It was an invincible crew. The rain marred the game and the spectacle. Not more than 5000 persons -braved the downpour to see the contest, and sat raincoated. huddlins under umbrellas. This morning 1t looked as II the event would have to be called off or postponed. Centre was anxious to have II over with and to move on to Texas. IT Is to play the Texas Aggies at Dallas next Monday. Protected by Insurance. Forty-eight consecutive hours OF rain ana no letup in sight caused Il meeting 10 be called hastily TO decide whether the game should be played. The game was insured for $4,000 against rain, with the provision that the money should be paid if one-tenth of an inch of rain fell between 8 80 A. M. and 9 80 p. NJ to-day. The insurance company paid the difference between the gate receipts and the amount OF the policy Coaches Moran of Centre and McKale of Arizona declared they were willing to have the game played in any sort of weather. The committee in charge decjded that the game would be played regardless Of weather conditions although the field was quagmire and the sale of seats had been comparatively small In the first half the Wildcats did not make first down and throughout the game they rarely had possession of the ball. In the third and fourth periods they made few good gains, but were unable TO maintain continued drive. The work OF Roberts was particularly noticeable, his sensational catches of forward passes. his line bucking and his work in interference being cheered by the spectators. y Roberts made Centres first touchdown within five minutes OF the opening gun. With Roberts leading the interference. McMilin and Tanner carried the ball to abe Wildcats 3-yard line. where the Arizonians held Tanner and McMillin, but were unable TO stop me Centre end. who backed across the line. The second touchdown came In the same period When. after bucking the ball down the feld, McMillin went through right tackle for the score. y Centres next touchdown came four rpinutes after the second period opened, when Tanner went through right guard. IfcMillin failed in attempts to kick the first three goals In the third period Arizona rallied and advanced. hut Tanner intercepted a forward pass iichind his own line and the Kentuckians ploughed down the muddy field to Rnother score, Snoddy carrying the BAN over Roberts kicked goal.
