Webster Stars as Columbia Cohorts Bo,p to Colgate, 21-l4 Captain of Upstate Team Scores 3 Touchdowns i’m Contest at South Field Vending zig-zag, puzzling course holding his feet remarkable we’ll on the rain-soaked gridiron of South Field, Captain Bob Webster Of Col gate twice made dashcs for more than fifty yards across the Blue and White goal line and single handed brought victory to the Maroon. The final score was Il to Ia. Webster, who comes from White Plains, played his last game for Col gate in the Thanksgiving Day struggle against the Morningsde Heights team and gave an exhibition Of broken field running that has not been bet tered on the Columbia field this season. Webster needed little interference. He reversed his field, changed his pace puzzlingly warded off tacklers with well-delivercd straight arm thrusts and once clear, sped madly across the chalk marks until he had scored The Maroon captain caught a pass from Sanford directly after the start Of the second quarter and ran thirty-five yards for touchdown; so, unassisted, he accounted for eighteen Of his teams twenty-one points. His scoring runs covered a distance of 140 yards. Without its irresistible captain, the upstate eleven might have had diff ficulty in outscoring Buck O’Neill’s outfit. The Blue and White offensive brought forth eleven first downs TO Colgate’s five and on straight football the Hamilton team did not come within Columbia’s thirty-yard line Only twice did O’Connor, the Maroon quarterback, fail to order a punt when his mates could not gain the required distance. Welch Misses Placement Kick In the third period Welch tried a placement goal from the thirty seven yard line on the fourth down, but the boot, while high enough, went trifle wide Of the cross bar. Another time forward pass was attempted ON the fourth down, but failed. Despite the extremely unfavorable conditions and the early hour at which the game was started. more than 1000 rooters assembled to watch the teams play the final game Of their season. Incidentally, today’s contest was the first time that Colgate and Columbia had met on the football field. The field was muddy and heavy and the ball was mud-coated, but there were remarkably few fumbles and the players held their feet we’ll. At tho start of the final quarter heavy rain began to fall and the men were soaked when the game ended. Columbia played a hard, fast game, put the attack was spasmodic and lacked the punch to carry the team a considerable distance down the field. koppisch, who had recovered from his injury received in the Ohio University game, starred until he was forced to retire in the third quarter. Both Of Columbia’s touchdowns followed unfortunate breaks for Coach Hunting toms team. De Stefano Makes First Down The first came soon after the start Of the game, when Burtt caught a short punt and carried back deep into Colgate territory. Koppisch went around left end for seven yards and De Stefano made it first down on the four-yard line. Offside was CALLED against Columbia and five yards were lost. On the second play after the penalty, however, koppisch went off center and left tackle for the first touchdown Of the game. Webster, who did not start he evened up the score at the begin ming of the second period when he caught forward pass and ran thirty five yards for score. After the kickoff De Stefano was forced to kick, and in the first play following the lineup Hermann fun bled and Galloway recovered for Column bia on Colgate’s thirty Vineyard line. Steady. plunging by Moszczensli, aided BY short forward pass, De stefano to koppisch, and TN otfside penalty, tance, and De Stefano plunged off tackle for the score Rurtt kirkod coaJ
