Fordham Goes Down Fighting Before Lafayette’s Drives Easton’s Fine Grew Wins, % to z, After Stubborn Tussle at Polo Grounds Fordham’s scrappy and belligerent eleven went down fighting yesterday before the superior play and the greater displacement of Lafayette’s unconquered crew from Easton, Pa. The score was % to 7, but the contest was not as one sided as the figures look on paper. The offensive machinery Of the local team seemed to be stalled during the hrst half and every attacking move was broken up before it could get fairly under way. On the other hand, Lafayette’s plunging drives in the first and second quarters demoralized Ford hams defense and tore ragged holes in her line, through which devastating gains were made. At the end of the frst half Fordham seemed hopelessly out of it, but a Won derful Transformation occurred during the ten minutes intermission between halves. Joe De Moe and Charley Brickley evidentlv had something to say to the Maroon squad during the rest period, for it was another team that came out to face Lafayette in the third quarter. The men brought with them ali the pep and dash that had been so noticeably lacking in the first half, and after Tommy Meyers, intercepting a beautiful forward pass from Brennan, had made thrilling fifty fve-yard run for sensational touch down, the team improved momenta rilv and were carrying the fight to their opponents throughout the two final periods. Perfect Weather for Game Perfect football weather prevailed for the opening of the gridiron season at the Polo Grounds, and Henry Fabian had worked wonders with the field on which the Giants and Yankees hid rec Gently fought their historic STRUGGLE for the worlds baseball champion ship. About 10000 festive football fans were in the stands t. see Fordham handed her first defeat of the present season. Both colleges had their bands on hand. and they worked as hard to outplav each other as did the men on the field. While Tommy Meyers and Schlickenmeyer were the heroes of the day for Fordham, the former making the touch down that saved his team from o coat VI “uite”fSft ElllOlt, IullDack, and Gazella, right halfback, were the stars for the visitors. Both sustained pain ful injuries during fierce scrimmages, but neither could be forced out of the game. Matty Brennan opened Lafayette’s pile-driving attack in the first quarter when he smashed through the center Of Fordham’s line for gain of six yards. Gazeila added eight more by a clever run around rioht end and a series of tremendous blows at the CEN ter of Fordham’s wavering defense brought the ball within the shadow of the Maroon goal posts. A mighty smash that scattered the Fordham line sent Elliot across for the first tally of the game, Brennan kicked the goal. During this drive Fordham was penal lied five yards for off-side play. MAROON RALLIES LATE Lafayette. after launching q crush ing attack that threatened to turn the game with Fordhar. into rout. found its offensive almost spent in the latter half of spirited tussle at the Polo Grounds yesterday, and was content to hold it’s own in the second half of play The whirlwind start. however had given the Eastonians so COM fnanding a lead that there was never the slightest doubt as to the result. Fordham, fighting tenaciously, came to life in the second half, stiffened it’s defence, and threw enough aggressive ness into the fray to check the visiting collegians, but the score ended 2S to 7 in Lafayette’s favor. For two busy periods Lafayette ploughed through the Maroon line al most at will. first down following first down with startling regularity Behind a well drilled line that opened up gaps in approved fashion the La fayette backs plunged through for short gains and big gains, and scored three touchdowns. First came a steady march Of rs yards, the Eastonians sweeping along irresistibly, then a spectacular minute during which La fayette covered the length of the field in two plays. then another march of 81 yards, the F’ordham line yielding ground before the onslaught. 1t was straight, hard. two listed football that showed the visiting offensive at it’s best. Through il all Doc Elliott. fullback and freshman. playing only his second game as a regular for Lafay cite, shone brilliantly. Carrying the ball three fourths of the time. breaking through for five and ten yarcs and more at a try, Elliott lea the attack and sustained it.
