SEWANEE TIGERS FITTING TN TIME f ON FORWARD PASS Nicholson Is Putting Team Through Thorough Drills in Aerial Attack Sewanee, Tenn. October 6.--tSpe- cial.) .)--Sewanee’s 26 to 0 victory over Cumberland university was by no means discouraging to the Tigers. Cum mberland brought team to the mountain that was the superior of any Cumberland team for many years. In weight they were fully equal to Sewanee, and they had sub stitutes in plenty to put in from time to time, and they used all of them. The disappointing feature of the game, from the Suwanee standpoint, was the failure of the Tigers to com plete their forward passes. Many were tried, and many failed in fact, practically all. While Cumberland also tried many passes, the Tigers were successful in breaking up near ly all of them and intercepted a number which were returned for good gains. Cumberland did not break up the Tiger passes in many instances. Mostly the ball would land where a Tiger was not to be found. Meet Bryson Today This feature of the game had been receiving Coach Mich holson’s atten- ton all this week. The weather has been so wet that the coach has been hard put to find a place to practice. Hardee field has been sea of mud, and as last resort the coach took the squad to the golf links. where he found a well drained piece of sod and he has, been putting the team through d stiff forward passing practice, in the hope of mak- ing a better showing in the game with Bryson college, which takes place at Sewanee on Friday, October Chattanoogas overwhelming de- feat of Bryson indicates that Bry- son has not the team she is in the habit of turning out, or that Chatta- nooga has far superior team thS fall. Sewanee in the past has been having hard time with Bryson, and the games have been closely matched affairs. The game Friday will be watched with interest, as 1t will give q line on the relative strength of Se- vance and Chattanooga. which teams meet later in theAsseason. SatterIec Does Well. No serious injuries resulted from the game with Cumberland. In the Cumberland game Satterlee, playing fullback, did the bunting for the Tigers, and this big boy surprised many of his co-workers by getting if a number of punls for forty yards and more, He outpunted his Cum berland rival gaining in every ex change. Once during the game Six id more essayed field goal from about the middle of the field, probably hay ing in mind the fact that he kicked field goal in the Vanderbilt game 1act n’ i,, attempt against Cumberland, but 1t was good boot Players to Get Chance. A number of players who did not get in the Cumberland game will likely get a chance In the game with Bryson. Sanders, the big tackle from Chattanooga, had only been out for few days, and did not know any signals. Bauman, the 21o-pound rull- back, was only out of the hospital; Pete” Baird, the fleet little quarter, was still suffering with sore leg, and Stivers, last years regular cen ter, only played few. minutes. .,re- lieving Litton toward the end of the game. This was I-ittons first game at center, and the Memphis boy did himself proud. He Is conner at he center position, and bids fair to make last year at tackle. To Use Same Lineup. It is probable ths. ;he coach will send in the same lineup against Bryson as he used against Cumber- land and this team will average close to 1S0 pounds In the line and 160 in the backfield. Powers showed so well at quarter that he will certainly be a regular first-string man, and he and Pete” Baird will fight it out for the quarterback honors during the season. Powers was particularly good in returning punts, and the few times he ran With the ball from for nation generally resulted in gains. The interference of the Tigers so far Is nothing to boast of, while the cutting down of Cumberland players last Saturday was better than has been the case in past years. On Pow CTS run of fifty yards for touch down. returning a punt not Cum berland player got within five yards of him. An amusing incident of the Cum berland game was “Bo-Peep” Skid more kicking off to tho five-yard line and then going down and getting the man with the ball without his having returned the ball yard. Skid ambled do wn the field behind the ball. and got his man without any difficulty. Skid tips the beam at a4o pounds. and Is tower of strength in the line. He ought to be heard from ths year.
